just seen a FIRST Bus, part of the portsmouth EOW Family, it was on a replacment service, first was a drawing of a hst, with swt on it, transition to where it was going to stop, and then back to the train, on the back it said SWT.

imagine if swt did get HSTs

I don't want no HSTs on Waterloo - Weymouth, but a return of them on Bournemouth/Poole/Weymouth - Reading and North would be great.

444s 4 the Weyloo.

It's just a saying, how about "I don't want HSTs on Waterloo - Weymouth". Besides, the replacement for the 442s is more than likely to be a further batch of 444s and why use Diesel when you have much cleaner 3rd rail?

That's just one lot of pollution - Fuel produces two, once at the refinery again when its burnt

I do actually know that, but it's much cleaner & pleasant for the people that matter - the travelling public.

Is 3rd rail/Overhead electric all produce from powerstations then?

HSTs wouldn't be suitable for the SWML. They would be 125mph geared trains doing 100mph maximum, less if on the Exeter line. Then there is the thorny issue of capacity - a Wessie, at 10*23m, can seat 100F/496S. 10-car 'Arkwright' (444) will seat 70F/598S. A 9-car '159' can seat 72F/516S. The maximum a HST can work is 2+9, 96F/403S.

Could swap a first class coach over for a standard though to balance things out!

First Class is already full and standing with FC passengers on some peak-hour trains on SWT. Also there would be revenue implications - losing FC capacity to seat more SC passengers is quite possibly revenue negative. In terms of doing it in a business sense - there will be the extra costs of maintenance, the cost of fuel, the added Track Access cost of using 70 tonne Class 43 power cars, and the cost of training all the staff on HSTs. Operationally, all those manually-worked doors would make it a nightmare situation for platform staff - at least with the multiple-units, the guard hits the button and the power doors close. Dwell times would be extended, acceleration at low speeds would not be as good - you'd have to recast the entire timetable again! Plus - is it physically possible? Are there enough Short-Link Bogied HST trailers sitting around to form into 2+9s to cover all the workings?

It all adds up to a surefire way of getting a lot of people booted out from their job. The existing fleets do the job better than any HST could.
