I am currently doing a two week work experience course with South West Trains which features a number of things such as assisiting guards, a visit to the Desiro simulator etc. I have decided to create a daily blog for what I do each day. Do you have SWT uniform? I imagine it would be difficult to check tickets without it!

I have very much enjoyed reading this over the past fortnight - it sounds like you had a very enjoyable time (albeit with the let-down on the final day!).

Its good to see that SWT really invest in pupils for work experience - ensuring that you have an interesting time.

Whenever we have work experience pupils in, I get the job of supervision if I am at work, and I tend to take advantage for cups of tea, trips to the newsagents, messenger duties, and administrative jobs, namely opening the post !

Go for it, once you get your "foot in the door" your made for life, and promotions easy if you keep the people smiling.

Downside to it is london during the rush hour, upside it gives you an extended break till a path clears amongst the sardines.

Always follow your Dreams, dreams turn into goals, once youve reach them goals set other goals within the job.

Never be affraid to make sugestion's and give idea's. Express yourself clearly. You never know you maybe Senior Guard before you know it.

My real work experience lasted 48 years as I am retired now. I actually started on British Railways 50 years ago in the coming September. I worked in the permanent way drawing office, we had no induction at all just shown to a drawing board and take it from there. I moved out into civil enginerring after 4 years but overall the work experience I gained was very good.
