Freight at Southampton Central

Post by ntanswell »

Hi,

I am visiting Southampton Central station on Saturday 4th March. Does any freight pass through the station? If not, where is the best place locally to see it? Does Southampton Central have an avoiding line, like other stations e.g Crewe, Carlisle?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Quite a lot goes through the station, as there are docks and frightliner terminals to the west of it. Lots of Freightliner 57s and 66s.

You'll see more at St Denys (one stop up the line) as anything from the eastern docks will pass that way, in addition to the western docks traffic.

Though, I'm not sure how much freight runs from the eastern docks - I think the western docks are busier.

Indeed, youd be better if possible to get to the northam train care depot at the railway crossing there is the footbridge which is fantastic for photos and spotting :)

aaah, more on a thursday and friday, no freightliner traffic on a saturday, not from southampton anyway, unless freightliners changed there operations recently. I you have a good time though.

Id have thought eastleigh would be busier, everything going through southampton central go through eastleigh and you get stuff at eastleigh you dont get a southampton like the ARC 59's or the MRL 59's on the yeomans and also, engineers trains in and out of belfour beaties sidings

Well not tottally correct as theres no stone trains on saturday at eastleigh
the best you can hope for there is the going and returns of the engineers trains this weekend from the possession at cosham and the one at Millbrook to Redbridge
The freightliners do run on a saturday theres 6 south and 1 north in total during the day no traffic from the eastern docks on a saturday other than the VSOE which i dont think is running. and the western docks might have the gypsum running which ran last week due 1615 at Soton Central and one north Freightliner Stone train (if it runs) other than that nothing from there

You may get some GBRF with the works at Millbrook too think 705 is down there. If they arent there they will be Platform 3 at Eastleigh
