Hi all,

We're trying to find out some info on some distant family, one of who worked on the railways in days of old. Could anyone give any info on this picture please? Location could be difficult, but an idea of the year, type of loco and nature of the work this loco would carry out. It's possibly pre-nationalisation as there's LNER on the tender. The loco number is 4124.

Thanks very much for any help.

The Stoat.

From the fixtures + fittings it appears to be a former GNR loco, but that's about all I can tell at the moment. THe LNER went through alot of numbering systems, so if someone can identify the loco, getting a rough date shouldn't be too difficult then.

Well it looks like an GNR ivatt loco, the nearest i can find is a Q2 but the splashers dont look right. Anyway, the best way of fidning it is to have a looksy at http://www.lner.info/locos/locos.shtml

Try posting it on the lner.info forum. Someone on there should know more info.

The only LNER loco numbered 4124 is an Ivatt J3 built in 1899 and scrapped in 1936.

I would date it as early to mid 1930's. It was an 0-6-0 so wasn't first in line for repainting when the liveies changed and is in the second LNER livery (The first had L & N E R and the number on the tender although not all locos got this one) and fairly dirty so likely to be nearer 1936 than 1928.

Not much else to go on there I am afraid
