GWR ENGINE SHED DEMOLITION!!!!!!!!!
Most of you will be unaware of the plans to build a Lidl Supermarket on the site of David and Charles the printers, alongside Newton Abbot Station and main line.
The plans involve the demolition of the David and Charles office building, and more importantly the original GWR Carriage shed which David and Charles use as its warehouse!
This is one of the many oppositions of the planned re-develpoment if Lidl get there way.
(others include the huge increase in volume of traffic at an already dangerous junction, possible loss of jobs if D&C have to relocate, which they dont! But thats not the issue here.)
I dont know of any large ORIGINAL railway buildings that remain as part of our heritage, so I thought that some of you many wish to voice your concern to Teignbridge District Councils planning office over this matter.
IF the plans are passed, the D&C building and Carriage Shed would be demolished to make way for the Lidl store and an office block, with parking for both.
The address, if you wish to write to them voicing your concern is,
Carol Walter
Planning Officer
Teignbridge District Council
Forde House
Brunel Road
Newton Abbot
South Devon
TQ12 4XX
If you would like to write, then please could this be done before THIS FRIDAY, I know it's short notice,
Cheers
P.S, feel free to paste and copy this to ANY other Railway forums too!!!!!

Having lodged a planning objection myself last year for a development in our road - I would urge people to engage the process. Some councils make the plans available online but most don't.
I was told by the planning officer that they have to take all views into account regardless of whether you live in the area but one of the main concerns was the local area development plan. If the development fits that then other concerns are not so important.
Any objection needs to be framed within the scope of the planning regulations and development plan. Since the building is historic then there may be some scope for objecting on those grounds. However, since the rough outline in the original post indicates the scheme is very much inline with John Prescott's desire for brownfield redevelopment I fear the worst.
Remember the advice the planning officer gave me - keep objections factual and non-emotional. Run them through a spell checker and avoid "txt spk" since the planning officer is unlikely to understand that.
Kindest regards

Anyway, I was unaware of any of this intil I read the post, and can't help thinking that it is a stupid place to put a supermarket - as far as I know it is on the Brunel Industrial Estate which isn't the best place to get into in the first place.
Davvydo also has a point in regards to it's proximity to Sainsburys - who in their right mind would choose Lidls over Sainsburys? Surely it would make more sense (if it was absolutely necessary to build a Lidls) to construct it somewhere where there are no historic buildings, or why build a store in Newton Abbot at all! If I wanted to go to a Lidls (which of course I don't) then I would go to Torquay.

I suspect Lidl want a store in Newton Abbot for the same reasons Tesco want a store in Gerrards Cross-they want want to expand their empire. It dosn't matter to Tesco that there is already a perfectly good supermarket within walking distance of their proposed development-they want a Tescos in every town in Britain and they'll do anyhting to get it.
STUPID GREEDY MONEY-GUZZLING FOOLS!
Sorry but I had to get that off my chest!

It matters because of a number of reasons:
- Will the construction require the demolition of an existing structure of historical significance? (as is the case in Newton Abbot)
- Will the new construction look significantly out-of-place next to a building of historical significance - such as in 'Conservation Areas'?
- Will the new development result in additional road traffic - putting a strain on existing transport infrastructure, and reducing the quality of life for those living around those roads? Now the Planners are supposed to talk to the Highways people about that - but somehow I doubt they really do.
- Is the location physically appropriate for development - as we found out, a railway cutting is distinctly inappropriate for a Tesco store...

What really annoys me about the Tesco development is that it just makes Gerrards Cross like every other town in Britain. Tescos is the same everywhere you go. There's no local variety any more, all bland, clinical supermarkets selling food that tastes like cardboard, that has probably been halfway round the world even if it was farmed in Britain, and that was bought from the farmer at a price that proably didn't even cover his costs. I just hate the entire supermarket mentality-we've become so obsessed with conveniance that we've forgotten values like quality and variety in our food. So much for progress.
I hope Tesco has learned their lesson about building supermarkets over railway cuttings. I hope they're considerate enough to clear up the mess they've made all over a once-attractive station. And I certainly hope John Prescott has learned his lesson about letting people build supermarkets in places where the vast majority of residents object to it...
