Problem on WCML?

Post by eyore »

Just driven old A6 over Shap, Penrith to Kendal and saw 6 trains (4 Up + 2 Down) standing on the mainline.

Something up, don't know what.

Possibly they have been routing trains wrong line to pass the blockage - obviously this can only be done one at a time, so trains in both directions have to stop.

Some bits of the WCML are bi-directionally signalled, so getting past a failed train is possible, but they'll have to queue for access to the single line.

Or perhaps not.

It is normal practice to close both lines to allow the train to be examined on both sides to see if it can be fixed and to ensure there is no obstruction to the opposite line.

According to www.sulzerpower.com the 325s were picked up by 47298, leaving Carlisle at 0210 on 1Z01 to Shieldmuir. They then returned with the 47 to Warrington on 1M61. Diesel 1, Electric 0. 8)

Why the need to make a jibe at Virgin.
Having been travelling to Euston quite a lot recently I can safely say the Pendolino's are excellent units and the punctuality on the WCML is improving rapidly!
Active tilt is just amazing...especially from the comfort of a first class seat sipping wine and enjoying the snacks on offer.
In this case it was one of the old Royal Mail networkers which caused the chaos.
Sadly the double track nature of the WCML makes delays like this inevitable!
This post is worth what you paid for it.

Royal Mail networkers are interesting, in that they are actually 319s with a Networker cab front. Strange confusion of different design periods if you ask me!

How old are the 325s? They can't be that old, surely.

Yup. They're good for first class but why should people who go standard suffer with . and the awful smell of toilets, especially when someone flushes it!
