Ellerman Lines

Post by jonhewes »

I was in the NRM and in the absence of my favourite loco (Duchess of Hamilton) my attentions turned to Ellerman Lines - what a fine loco that must have been before it was sectioned.

I read on the placard that it was withdrawn in 1966 and not actually sectioned until 1976. Did it spend 1966-1976 in preservation? Did it run at all during this period and was it in good condition.

Irrespective of the loco's condition, I cannot believe that an organisation who's main objective is preservation could justify chopping such a large artefact apart.

Cheers

If this is a Bulleid Pacific we are on about, they are rather common, so butchering one a bit in the name of education isn't too much of a loss!

As for did it run in preservation, definately not! It was a Barry scrapyard machine, so was probably in pretty bad external condition when it was extracted in 1974.

Sectioned by Flying Scotsman Services no less...

I have a picture of it fully sectioned but still in ex-scrapyard external condition at FSS's outstation (Lincolnshire I think).

You can't turn round without tripping over a Bulleid pacific, so better section one of them than City of Truro, don't you think?

I've never been totally clear about the point of sectioning as an educational experience. I never really gained anything as steam engines are just too complex for "the smoke/ steam goes this way" to explain anything much.

There are at least 20 Bulleid pacifics in preservation. Only 7 Gresley Pacifics.

But a Merchant Navy is more suitable for main line work -- look at Southern Locomotives Ltd. that provide most of the motive pwoer for the Swanage railway. They sold 35027 Port Line because they have realised the light pacifics are the best option for operating the line.

Besides there is already 3 complete examples of the merchant Navy in existence plus several others that haven't been restored from Barry scrapyard condition yet.

It has gone to Southall with 35022 Holland America Line. The idea is to use 35022's boiler as the spare for 35027 and to dispose of 35022's frames.

Port Line should eventually return as a main line engine.

I reckon that Ellerman Lines is far better sitting sectioned in the NRM than it could have been, sitting as a rusting hulk on a siding somewhere, awaiting the ££££££'s needed to get it into a respectable state. From what I've seen of EL, it would be less of a job to take it from "as is" condition to working, than it would from "ex-Barry" condition, so there is always that option as a slight possibility for the future (if all the other Bulleid Pacifics suddenly disappeared!)
