2 steam trains in 1 day
Hi all
I had a busy and wet morning today at my local railway station (Shipley, nr Bradford)
The Flying Scotsman came thru on its way to the Crewe weekend thingy.
Then a couple of hours later Duchess of Hamilton came thru also on its way to Crewe.
Got some pics but not that good as it was raining very much indeed. lol

Just one question, was Duchess of Hamilton going by road?ilovequo wrote:Then a couple of hours later Duchess of Hamilton came thru also on its way to Crewe.
If there was a Duchess going through on the mainline, then it would have been our 6233 Duchess of Sutherland.
Could even have been Princess Elizabeth in disguise!

Well that person then probably can't read nameplates. Hamilton can't go mainline, unless they fit airbrakes to her and remove the motion. Sutherland is the only Coronation in service at the moment, and with the soon-to-be streamlined Hamilton unlikely to be steamed again, you'll probably only ever see 6233 on the mainline from the Princess Coronation class. Sorry, but it's fact.

This is interesting!!!
The Crewe "Great Gathering" website has been showing photographs of locos arriving at Crewe Works for a while. According to them, Sutherland arrived at the Works on 7th September (Wednesday), and the two Princesses have been there all week, so I can't imagine what was going through Shipley today!! Hamilton was taken out of the Great Hall at the NRM on 3rd September, so I would imagine that this might have been what went through Shipley, but considering the "mainline ban" on her, I would expect road transport to get her to Crewe. Strange, eh??
Anyone shed any light on this??

Yep....I agree! The only two "red" engines not already at Crewe (as of last night) are Olton Hall and Hamilton. Maybe I'll have to ask a few searching questions tomorrow at Crewe!
Cheers

Looks like you'll get the best weather on Sunday!! Knowing my luck it'll be p***ing down all day Saturday; that's the forecast! Never mind, rain will help England to win the Ashes!

It most likely was Hamilton as she was to be towed by Olton Hall to Crewe. Some of the lads from Tyseley were at the NRM on wednesday making sure she was fit to travel. She will then be dragged back to Tyseley for streamlining work to commence behind either Leander or Alderman A E Draper. Personally I think she looks better as is, but that's my opinion! What ever happens when they leave crewe it will be an odd sight, Leander, Alderman A E Draper and Duchess of Hamilton together for the return to journey to tyseley! (rumour has it that Flying Scotsman may also come back at the same time? but that may be complete tosh!)

Many mainline locos don't have air brakes, City of Truro, Rood Ashton Hall and Olton Hall for example all run vacumm brakesbaggy6233 wrote:Well how did Olton break 6229 then? She hasn't got any air brakes!
Hmmm.....Must have been permitted to use vacuum braking for just those trips. Surely they would've removed some, if not all of the motion!
