East Lancs Jinty
I was wondering if the East Lancashire Railway has returned it's Jinty (number 47324) has return to passenger traffic yet. I now that it has been in steam since March, but wasn't sure about weather it has been in passenger service.
I hope someone can help!

hmm david yu'll be eating your words mate, 78019 is still going!rwaceyw wrote:No it hasn't.
The Jinty's restoration has officialy ending, but currently every time we try and run her she fails! Shes ran on one or two passenger turns, but to be honest shes quite useless for our line!
It was February she returned by the way!

They don't.
45231 is a heap, and that was done at Loughborough wasn't it? Give it 5 coaches and you crawl up the bank out of Alton at walking pace once you're at the summit. Which is utterly pathetic performance for a 5MT. 41312 (2MT Tank) can do it much better, and 73096 (another 5MT, though a Riddles rather than a Stanier) doesn't notice when you have load 7.

45231 is owned by Burt Hitchen and was not overhauled by our own very highy skilled enginers
on the other hand 45305 which has been aclaimed "the best black 5 on the mainline" is performing flourlessly and i lookforward to traveling behind her in September, this lcocmotive like 78019 was restored by our GCR enginers and are both running well, even though 45305 did have a few teathing problems, there was never any problem with power, i can asure you
regarding 45231s lack of power, i think i know why but if i went into it , i could get took to court with slander or somthing like
cheers

It was done at Loughborough and is completely gutless. This Jinty (it seems) was also done at Loughborough and fails every time they fill the boiler with water. I know enough about steam engine restoration to know that one man can't do it alone.
Regardless of which personnel overhauled them, two locomotives recently overhauled at the GCR are incapable of pulling the skin off a rice pudding. You could take your blinkers off and admit that this is not something that's going to improve their reputation, and as such I'm not going to change my opinion until they outshop an engine that can get up a hill with more than just it's tender in tow.

the gcr did no work on 45231
45305 has proved otrs self by doing 8 carrages and the peak on the rear (for testing) and i know it did 60 restored by the gcr
45231 on the other hand when it did a test had assistance with 78019 and it was only an 8 coach train
78019 has pulled 8 on the gcr with no problems, this was restored by the LSLG
and the elr jinty was never touched by the gcr lads, i guess its a Rilye project, not that im biased but that says it all

Fair enough, I may have been reading stuff between the lines that wasn't there regarding the Jinty.
I'm still thoroughly unimpressed with 45231 though and I reckon they botched the overhaul completely (Not such that it's unsafe, just that it performs terribly). All I know on that subject is that it was done "at the GCR", I don't know how many different groups there are who work on locos and who is ultimately responsible for quality control when things are released to traffic. Whoever said that 45231 was fit for traffic was, well, wrong. IMO. Allegedly.
Never seen 45305, so no comment there.
