SWT Queries

Post by ntanswell »

I am traveling long-haul London Waterloo-Plymouth instead of FGW. Am i right in thinking these services are in the hands of 3 car 159s usually doubled up? Im having a few worries after traveling on a wessex train from bristol to cheltenham. The unit in ex-central livery and was in a shabby state. It was filthy, half the seat covers were missing, some of the seats had no padding and EVERYTHING RATTLED. Ive never traveled SWT before, and i hope there units will be in better condition than Wessexs. I dont want 5 hours of hell. Just a few questions about SWT.

Do the services to Plymouth have a mini buffet or trolley?

Are SWTs 159 in good nick? Any pictures?

Anyone traveled on there 159s before? Was it a good experiance?

Do they double up the 159s to Plymouth?

Help much appreciated

158872=52872+57872
159001=52873+58873+57873
159022=52894+58894+57894

so on so forth then

158901=52901+57901

The 159s are nice- I travel on them quite often, and they're generally much nicer than 158s- better maintained, and with a nicer internal colour scheme (the smart SWT red). In fairness to Wessex, their refurbished units are catching up a bit.

They ought to be all 6-car between Salisbury and Exeter nowadays (sometimes 9 or 6+170 to Salisbury), now that the 170s' introduction has allowed the 159s to be dedicated to this route. you may occasionally find a 3-car though.

Beyond Exeter it's often 3-car, either splitting to Paignton/Plymouth, or 3 coaches just being left behind at Exeter. It is sometimes 6, though, but 3 is probably enough once you get down that way.

159 is like a 158 except for the extra car....

Thankyou very much SCOTTLOWES,salopiangrowler,simon t and 1288gaje. They sound very nice (and look it from these pictures http://dysgraphyk.fotopic.net/p10398402.html http://dysgraphyk.fotopic.net/p10398401.html)

How much does it cost to upgrade to first class? Do you get any extras (free tea and coffee and free food like you get on virgin west coast :D )
thanks for the help

The weekend upgrade is £5, but I don't think you'd get any complimentary stuff.

First class on a DMU is very different from a loco hauled first class, or even Pendolino first class. No hot food excepting what you get off the trolley, unless you are on a DMU that happens to have a buffet hatch (and SWT's trains don't.)

SWT is a very nice and well maintained TOC. You should have a nice journey, though these trains stop at lots of stations south-west of Woking.

And it's likely it'll split at either Salisbury and/or Exeter.

There is one that splits on Sunday, according to the timetable. Plymouth/Paignton.

Also it's likely that units will be left behind at either Salisbury (no more than 6 cars can go west of here) or Exeter, possibly both.

I'm fairly certain that the 1420 on Saturday is 6-car all the way to Exeter...
