Couldn't we have a neither option? :)

Or at least one for 47 and Mk2s.

Having travelled behind a 47/86 in a mk2 from Preston to Teignmouth a few times, then travelled from York to Newcastle a few times on a voyager, I can tell you I'd rather be going to Devon which took about 5/6 hours than be going from York to Newcastle which takes 1 hour, comfort wise. But my girlfriends in Newcastle so i'd travel on nethin to see her, even a voyager.. :-? So far i've been lucky, both times I've been up to see her I've had 158's from Blackburn to Leeds/York. I've seen pictures of 150's on the Blackpool to York's, no spank you.... anyway, back to topic, loco and stock anyday :)
It's all about the sound!!! :) (Excluding unit's, electric's, kettles and for now 57's, 66's and 67's)

47 and mark 2's any day, cant beat loco haulage :D. Fail to see any real difference between voyagers and the supers other then the extra coach and tilt though thats nothing really.

The last trip I made on Virgin was a 47 and MKII's instead of the booked HST.
I have to say that from a normal punters view it has very little going for it.

When I lived in Birmingham I'd dread getting a 47 simply because in the last year of so of 47s on cross country timekeeping was terrible as 9 times out of 10 i'd miss my connection in Leeds, whereas HSTs kept time 9 times out of 10

Based upon my experiences of VXC travel I would plump for an HST - 47s seemed always to be loosing time and I have had numerous nighmarish journeys on voyagers (standing room only between York and Oxford not the best way to encourage travel by train).

If you can handle a Pendelino for an hour and a half, have you considered going via Preston and Carlisle (and onto Newcastle via 156)?

NO TO THE RED

Post by 45002 »

When i went to Newcastle upon Tyne last year
I took a class170 from Birmingham new street to liverpool lime street
From Liverpool to York on a class 158 , York to Newcastle on a class 91 and mk4's and did the same for the return trip, with plenty of seats on all the trains and only the GNER train was late by 7mins
Yes it took Longer
Yes it Cost more about £16.00 More and that was with My Disabled railcard(With my railcard there are No Restriction on when i can travel on Saver Tickets)
And all this to avoid those Red Sardine Cans

I've thought about it but it takes longer.... less time with my baby :( I'm just gonna keep risking it and hopefully I won't get a 150 or somethin, 1 1/2 hours on a 150, nah thanks :P

The Intercity 125 is king for me.

I like 47's as well.

LHCS has many benefits compared to vomiters. But my experiences of them were not always that good - 47 hauled cross country services (and I started using them before privatisation) were almost always dirty, corwded and horribly late in my experience. Vomiters are at least usually clean (shame about the other two). HSTs towards the end of their Virgin days were pretty . too as far as being clean goes.

my choice for inter city travel would never include under-floor engines though, so I'd have to go for HSTs, provided they were refurbished.
