Last Class 86 in Anglia

Post by charlierc »

Yesterday (December 31st 2004) saw One Anglia retire all Class 86's in service. :(

They were employed on two diagrams and end 18 years of history.

Can anybody tell me the diagrams ? :-?

Saw most delivered to Willesden being hauled through Bletchley, one every saturday morning, often in sequence.

Initially in Electric Blue livery, they ruled the WCML for 25 years with their younger brothers, the class 87's.

Still around on Freightliner duties, these powerful machines outstripped anything before it and their versatility ensured their long life.

As all the working parts are replacable, electric loco's can continue until their frames are worn out.

I wonder how many miles they've each travelled?

Only returning to the depot for maintenence, these machines, were otherwaise constantly available and fully utilised, replacing class 81 to 85's wherever possible which relegated the latter to mainly freight duties from the former's introduction to service :)

2011 will be the last year of the 86.

By then, they will be 45 years old.

Freightliner will retire their Class 86 fleet in 2011. They are mostly used as two locos + about 18 wagons.

Ive just been informed that the life of these locos have been increased untill the end of March '05, due too the poor reliability of the class 90s.

That will please all those people that spent money on the farewell tour
