Powercuts

Post by nwallace »

On Wednesday night we had a bit of a power cut in North Fife... well actually it took out almost all of North Fife.

Something that i noticed was that trains were crawling up to Tay Bridge South and waiting.

Presumably the power was out all the way to Leuchars at least, so what was it they were stoppgin and waiting for?

The signals may have possibly been out...

Signals would have been working as they are powered from seperate circuits to the domestic supply, but the "Box's" aint always!

So why were the trains crawling up to the box and waiting?

RAF Leuchars was running off backup generators, it wasn't just the domestic supply that was out presumably a grid fault at Leuchars.

All trains would have to be 'talked' past signals, I'd assume - I don't know what the signalling's like around your way, but if it's reasonably modern, all the signals would probably drop back to danger when the power went out.

Authorising a train to pass at danger is like playing russian roulette with trains till only takes one slip up and wollop, all authorised SPAD's from a PSB must be carried out at least 5 - 10 mph.

An unlit signal would be considered as at Danger, but, since they're powered off a separate circuit, they'd probably show a permanent red rather than going out altogether.

Yeah, St Andrews was powered as well, as i said it was a grid fault at Leuchars takign out everywhere off that circuit.

The Tay Road bridge seems to be powered from Dundee however the TV Transmitter that deals with Dundee went out as well!
