How does this work then ?

Post by decapod »

I was stuck in Shepperton last night due to flooding at Fullwell.

We were waiting for a bus when the train crew said they had clearance to try and get back to Waterloo.
Off we went.

Just before Fullwell, the entire trackbed was a pond. All 3 rails were underwater.

I presume the train was running on batteries? the conductor rail must have been short circuited.

Yes - that was earlier in the afternoon at Hampton, but had been cleared.
Then it flooded.

Not a good train month for me - the Shepperton trains were cancelled last tuesday due to flooding at Clapham, now starting next week I have to endure 3 weeks of hell on the trams while they dig up the Thameslink line from Sutton to Wimbledon.
A section of line, which incidently was built in the 1920's with assistance from the loco in my pic on the left, which was SR number 1556 at the time, which I have also modelled :)

Nah, you can probably run under those conditions. An awful lot of stray current, but there would probably be enough voltage across the con rail/ running rails to get the train through. You only need 400V to actually move the train (450 if it's a disastro)

No, mines not.

My electricity is charged with my gas, my water is charged with the sewage.

Water woudln't cause a total short circuit in the same way that putting a bit of metal between the live and the return would
so the Potential Difference between the Return and Live would not be 0 as it would if a total short circuit occured.

Was it deep enough to cause Bow waves?

I bet the nurses at the hospital love that when you provide them with a sample.

Would still have been interesting to watch what happened if any ducks tried landing on it.

Dinner!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually the duck would probably have to earth to get fried.

Might be enough heat generated for a slow roasting though.
