Damn Engineering

Post by philbozz »

I was going to Heathrow on the 28th August, found the trains 0715 or 0745 Wolvo-Euston on qjump.co.uk . Seeing how much it would be on the Virgin Trains site(think its £18rtn if you book 7days in advance) and it says 'No available trains' or something...I presume this is either the website dont work or bloody engineering works again :-?

There are a certain amount of seats to each fare.

There could be 50 seats on the 7 day advance fare and then another 50 on the 3 day advance.

Either that or Virgin haven't released the seats yet.

Try Birmingham -> Reading
Reading -> Paddington
IF there are engineering works.

WCML is always like it. Get the train to Leicester or Nottingham from Birmingham and go to St Pancras istead, its right next to Euston. Failing that, use Chiltern.

I had a look at NS->Reading->Paddington then get the HeathrowExpress but it'd be cheaper to get the tube(and more fun on a crowded Picc train :p)

Get the tube. you can get off at Hatton Cross and walk to the main viewing areas from there. If you go to Heathrow you need to get a (free) bus to the viewing areas, and that drops you off at Hatton cross anyway.

You can go to the top of the car park at Terminal 2 and look south at the runway there. Although its not allowed many people still do that.

Hatton Cross would be your best bet - you are also close to the aircraft road crossing:

(Hatton Cross it just up that road - a fair walk, but not too bad)

and can easily tansfer between the two approaches when the 3pm change occurs.

if you want a view of the north runway (27R / 09L) then the Heathrow Airport Visitors Centre is a great place to go. It has catering facilities and toilets. You get other plane spotters there aswell, with a great view of the airport, and concorde. If you plan to listen to your airband then ensure that you take earphones with you posts say "please do not use airband radio's"...however all the others use them with earphones, including me.

I recommend you do go to the visitors centre - you do get a great view of both landing and departing aircraft.

From Hatton Cross, jump on a 285 bus and ask for The Visitors Centre. It is literally 5 minutes away.

Ah yes, the Visitor centre, completely forgot! Not much use for photography, but great for just observing the aircraft. BTW, the 285 bus if free between the central bus station and Hatton Cross, and runs every 10 minutes. The visitir centre is distinguised by the Renaissance hotel (big concrete building) on the far side, and big posters advertising office space (with a BA 744 in them :wink:)
