Although it's not quite the same (not announcements but passenger displays), the refurbed Mersey 507/508's have electronic displays in each coach which are updated by GPS, telling next station, change here for blah blah etc, they do keep going bing bong though. It even works on the underground bits in Liverpool.

The lady who does the Victoria, Bakerloo, Circle and Central lines on the LU is a lady called Emma Clarke, and has done a whole host of professional voice overs in her life time.

"Sonia", "Pete", "Celia" and others are all made up names.

I can't remember the guys and girls who do the National Rail (and the odd ones who do the SET ones) but none of them are exceptionally famous. The guy who does the 450's for SWT is... but again, I can't remember what he's famous for.

I'll go look

Can't say I recognise Emma Clarke's voice anywhere.

The most annoying station announcement has to be one which has been introduced within recent weeks. It says something along the lines "This is a special announcement. Be aware, be vigilent. Report anything suspicious to a member of staff.". Annoying.

When I was stuck in Salisbury for a staggering 1 hour and 20 minutesd the other week, I kept listening for any announcements for services to London. Thought maybe they might have put some special coach services on or something. They didn't even issue an appology announcements for the disruption to services! All I kept hearing was umpteen bloody "be aware, be vigilent" and "please do not leave cases or parcels unattended anywhere on the stations" annoucnements. What a depressing day that was.

The one that always annoys me is the "I am sorry for any delay to your service" automated message at News Street every five minutes. You can't be sorry for anything, you're an automated message!!!!!!!!

the bloke who does (recorded) those speeches at New Street was there personally two or Three weeks ago, featured on ALL of the local news programmes though the interviewers forgot to tell him how annoying his voice can be if your waiting for a train to Wales and your told to go to one end of the station then TWO minutes before the train is due to depart you told to go to the platform at the far end of the station and your carrying lots of luggage because your going on holiday (Really Annoying)

Lol. I was at Bham Int several years ago waiting for the Wolverhampton local, and it was replatformed 5 or 6 times! On the fianl time, the young lady who was in the chair doing the announcements at the time said' The train to Wolverhampton will now be arriving on Platform 1, 10 mins late. This is due to the signalman not being able to make up his mind!' I like the Birmingham New Street voice overs, its hilarious when they make a mistake pressing the buttons :D

There's an area down here called Moulsecoomb. Real sh*thole. About ten years ago it was classed as one of the top five trouble spots in the country. It's where a lot of the low lifes live. It's pronounced "Maulse-coomb (like the s in Morse) but on the new Electrostar trains running down here, I dunno whether it's her or not, but the female voice announces it as "Moulzcoome" - really soft and posh, like pronouncing bucket as 'bouquet.' Always makes me laugh.

Always interesting to hear how somebody from some other part of the country pronounces local names differently to how the locals do.

The bloke who records the NR station announcements (such as New Street) is the wonderful Mr Phil Sayer.

He has a website, where you can listen to samples of his other work.

Click the Samples button at the top to listen. The impressions ain't too bad! :o

But have you noticed that once the delay exceeds thirty minutes, it becomes a SEVERE delay? Even more annoying after you've heard it 352 times.

The "I'm very sorry" should probably be livened up by some background noises of someone being hit. That would make us all feel better.
