Many people think the number range of the Class 52 'Westerns' stops at D1073, but in fact 100 names where put forward, for a build that was expected to be larger than it actually was. Perhaps if history had been re-written and more of the Westerns had been ordered, these locos would have been powering trains along the GWML:

D1074
Western Valiant

D1075
Western Sceptre

D1076
Western Diadem

D1077
Western Jewel

D1078
Western Crown

D1079
Western Victor

D1080
Western Lustre

D1081
Western Eagle

D1082
Western Hawk

D1083
Western Falcon

D1084
Western Comet

D1085
Western Planet

D1086
Western Isle

D1087
Western Meteor

D1088
Western Zephyr

D1089
Western Mistral

D1090
Western Flower

D1091
Western Rose

D1092
Western Garland

D1093
Western Emblem

D1094
Western Legend

D1095
Western Heritage

D1096
Western Fury

D1097
Western Rapier

D1098
Western Sabre

D1099
Western Javelin

Not the only case - there should have been 27 EM2's but only 7 were built - perhaps if all 27 had been built, the GCR might have been 1500V electrified all the way to Marylebone and still be with us?

the run of cl46s stopped about 20 short I think, and the electrical equipment that was to go into them (it had already been made) ended up in some 47s.

Was there ever a Western called Western Gladiator? I had an OO gauge model of one with that name.

D1016 was called WESTERN GLADIATOR, nameplate was applied at Swindon when loco was built in February 1963 and removed when loco was withdrawn from service in December 1975.

Western Movie...(spagetti).........

More seriously I think I read somewhere they weren't going to be westerns at all originally...but named after places in the west country...like D1000 being called "Chedder Gourge".

Speaking of westerns, can anone shed any light on why D1015 has been at old oak common for the better part of a month now?
Does she 'live' there now?, or is it a temporary home?

Is it something to do with her gearbox rebuild?

It is gearbox but its worth the rebuild as they found all the ball bearings in the oil sump. Could have been catastrophic if still running. So its being nursed back to health.
