High fare rises e.g. York - Doncaster

I don't know if anyone here is affected by this, but York-Doncaster, like many other routes over recent years, has lost its Off Peak Day Return (CDR) ticket, as of the January fares change.
This ticket cost £5 for a CDR back in 2001 (when it was possible to do the journey by a Class 373 Eurostar "White Rose" set, and the 0923 from York was valid on it).
Last year, the CDR had risen to a shocking £16.20.
And now? The CDR has been abolished, so you have to get the Anytime Day Return (SDR), priced at £17.40.
I know inflation is difficult to calculate, but it should be around £7. Of course, rail tickets have increased significantly more than inflation, as the Government seeks to encourage us into our cars and off the rails
Is anyone else affected by this change, or any change like it in your local area? Does it cause you to drive?
I don't drive myself, but the thought of going to Donny by car would have been unimaginable. But now? The last time I just did York - Doncaster I got a lift, and I will do next time if I possibly can! The journey was slower, but given that it took me to my house, it only took about 15 minutes longer than if I had taken the train and cycled from the station.
