Is Warrington worth a few hours visit to watch some freight?

You could try Warrington Bank Quay or possibly Acton Bridge - on WCML.

A youtube video for 2010 shows the sort of stock you might see at Acton Bridge - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8ov8B9PkbY

and at Warrington Bank Quay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZdEmmO8vkE

Warrington's OK for freight. :)
Arpley yard is adjacent to Bank Quay station, and you still get daily 'Low line' coal traffic to / from Fiddlers Ferry power station.

Oh, while you're on the subject of a 'Grand Day Out', I had a great one on Saturday.
Steam excursion from Liverpool Lime Street to Carlisle :)
Out via the Settle & Carlisle, and back via Shap.
10 car rake hauled by the 'Dutchess' :)
According to my iPhone speed-box gadget thingy-ma-bob, came down Shap at 75mph (ish  )

That does sound smashing. Leaving Lime Street under steam power must have been quite an experience!
