Fastest London - Edinburgh service?

Post by bonan »

What is the best time bethween London Kings Cross and Edinburgh? The fastest one I could find is the southbound 05:40 service calling at Newcastle only, doing the trip in 4:00. Northbound there seems to be several services with a travel time of 4.25, with the fastest one being the 16:00 service calling at York, Darlington, Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed. Has there been any faster services before? Isn´t the 10:00 service still know as the Flying Scotsman? But when did it chease to be a non-stop service? Wikipedia only states "during the british rail era". :)

Can't answer for the current services, but the Flying Scotsman could only run stop if the loco was fitted with a corridor tender that allowed the crew to be changed on the move. Deltics and then HST's would require a stop to swap crews. From the 77-78 Timetable the Deltic hauled Scotsman left KX at 1000 and was given 5h27 to get to Edinburgh with 2 minutes at Newcastle. By 1985, the HST powered Scotsman was the 1030 to Aberdeen and was allowed 4h30 to Edinburgh, with 3 minutes at Newcastle. It's not progressed that much with electrification, due to the 125mph limit imposed in the UK.
Expanding the TS wagon fleet.
