Does anyone know what they are used for? They are placed near level crossings. They aren't a speed restriction as trains go past crossings at normal line speed. They can be found on the Tyne Valley line and probably other lines but I have only seen them on the Tyne Valley.

I saw a sign like that on Video125's Norwich-London and according to the narration it means a train can go wrong line down the level crossing but it has to go the speed on the sign.

Ahh that might explain why they are usually placed on the wrong side of the track! Thanks very much! :)

X Indicates a Crossing, and the number is the Speed limit.

It's an "Automatic Level Crossing Wrong Direction Speed Restriction" sign as someone has already said. See page 99 of this document (which ought to be right!): http://www.rgsonline.co.uk/Railway_Grou ... ss%202.pdf

Actually X usually means the facing road.

It's often used on signal indicators.
