Class 130 (116 conversion for parcels use) livery

Post by rufuskins »

Following on from my current Class 125 repaints (essentially larger engine version of the 116s) I was looking to create the Class 130 sets. These were 116s stripped of seating for parcels use between 1966 and 1977, and making use of a GUV as a central trailer in at least two of the sets.

Based on the time-line I suspect that they were in BR Blue possibly with the relevant parcels lining, however I would be grateful for confirmation of this? Unfortunately the superb RAILCAR website is still off-line for updating and I cannot therefore make use of their galleries!

Any help would be most appreciated?

No I haven't and that picture is exactly what I have been looking for. This confirms the use of BR Blue and indicates the position of the side lettering "Parcels Service".

My proposed consist was to include a GUV as a central trailer, but I could now add a consist as indicated in that shot.

Many thanks for that, and the reply is very much appreciated.

That would need the GUV to be wired up for the MU control system, have a through air pipe fitted and probably be converted to the two pipe vac brake system. I wonder if they went to that expense? I don't recall seeing a photo of DMU with a GUV as the centre trailer but it would make reversal at the end of the trip easier, but I suppose there were plenty of shunters about in those days

Hi
I think this was only done for the "Railair" conversion.

"1976 RCTS coaching stock book lists W86174 and W86572 as "wired for operation as Diesel Multiple Unit trailers and are unheated"
The 1978 edition of the same book has a photo of W86572 in use in a DMU at Reading in 1976, and says it was converted in 1978 to a gangwayed Newspaper Packing Van.
The photo looks pretty much like a normal GUV to me, BR logo and "Rail Express Parcels" bottom left on the bodyside."

There is also a reference to those GUVs being rewired in Hugh Longworth's book on 1st Gen DMUs, and was the basis for my efforts vis-a-vis Class 130s. The original post was merely to clarify their livery and with the plethora of photos pointed to by Jon et al that is clear, and I can proceed accordingly.

Alec

PS Presumably I will need permission to renumber the relevant GUV to either W86174 or W86572 or both!
