Was up in York for the Corporate Welcome this week, there was a lot of talk about it. Was also mentioned that if testing goes well, they may look into getting 390's to replace the 91s, instead of completely brand new sets being designed and ordered.

They're not going to go anytime soon, haha. Due to it being returned to public running, olympics and the money. Although, whomever takes over the franchise next, part of the agreement will be that it says as "East Coast" or the liveries of the trains have to stay the same/very similar (due to cost of constantly repainting - one of the two). Think there are also plans for them to repaint the EMT HST.

Too right. Personally, I think they should get brand new 91s made. Keep the old ones has 91/1 and have the new ones 91/2.

Nah, why build a bunch of 140pmh locos or trains for a 125 mph railway? Get the Class 89 into production! :D

The 89 had some reliability problems IIRC, and ended up just being a prototype for the 90/91 range.

I don't think there's anything wrong with building 90s or 91s for a 125mph railway, especially as upgrades or even new routes might yet allow them to stretch their legs. I somehow suspect that technology has moved on though, and a new build would have upgraded equipment installed in order to maximise the future lifetime spares availability.

More powerful yes, but they don't tilt and therefore have to respect lower speed limits on the WCML.

According to the data on the RailwayCentre Pendolinos output 5100kW, or 6,850hp, which is more than the Class 91 6300hp max or 6090hp continuous. This is also what is said on the Wiki pages, usual caveats. I'd guess the Pendolino's figure will be continuous perhaps too. And for all their tilt kit, it comes out to being around 20tonnes heavier for a 9-car Pendo versus the 91+8+DVT, so not a bad trade off really.

Probably because the class 91s are also 140 mph locos! (unless thats what you are taking about?)
