I'm looking at working on some layouts involving harbors and canals that connect with railways, does anyone know any good reference books or real life prototypes?

Well, the months of circular Google searching is what led me to ask.

Send me a PM with your email address (don't post it on here) and I can send you a map of the original layout of Preston Dock and its railways, circa 1957 if that'll help.

Try looking up material about the old Manchester Ship Canal; Railway system, one of the largest private industrial railway set ups ever. Stretching all over Trafford Park and Salford Quays, in different sections on land around the canal all the way down its entire length to Eastham Dock.
