Nottingham - Carlisle tickets?

Post by Bulman91 »

Hello all.

The cheapest tickets I can find to go from Nottingham to Carlisle (outward Friday 5th of November, return Monday 8th of November), but this is £66 :(

I've tried Megatrain but every route I try won't allow me to have an outward journey due to 'no tickets being available'

I would go by coach, but I'm taking my dad there and due to some medical problems the only real way of getting there is by train.

Thank you for your help all!

Bulman.

Hello Bulman,

Is you Dad a pensioner, if so, he can get there with a Senior Citizens Railcard, if not, then it'll be the same price as you then. I take it your not a student, or suchlike ??

Have you seen any Advance Booking tickets for this route, it may be a suggestion to see if there any going. Unfortunately, you'll utilise at least 2 different Train Companies, maybe even 3, so, the charges can expand a little extra the more fingers get into the pie.

Have you read this article, it's quite informative.

It's worth playing around to check different routes, or seeing if it comes out a different price if you buy your tickets in two sections. It's not ideal, but the system is really that awkward. You'll be amazed how much the price for the same journey can fluctuate.

Have to agree, recently bought tickets from Newcastle to Oxenholme via Carlisle. It was cheaper to buy each section separately (N'cle-Carl, Carl-Oxenholme) rather than buying a through ticket!

Alternatively, give Chester-le-Track a ring, they're very good at finding the cheapest option.

Ha, I remember when me and my dad went to walk Hadrian's Wall: a return to Newcastle was cheaper than a single, and we only needed a single. There's some joined up thinking for you. :o

How about trying this lot: http://www.raileasy.co.uk/ I have found them handy as they show slower trains as well which are a)usually cheaper and b) usually more convenient for myself in terms of connections.

I'm liking that money saving site.

Addendum: I don't suppose walking to Carlisle's an option. Only took us five days. :P

Hello all.

I tried Raileasy.co.uk but it's still the same price as any other website, I think I'm just gonna have to fork out the £66.10 :(

The through tickets are as follows:-

NOT - CAR Off Peak Return (SVR) Rte: Any Permitted £66.10 (Valid at or after 0930)
NOT - CAR Anytime Return (SOR) Rte: Appleby £61.80 (Valid at any time)

SOR = Valid on any train, outward within 5 days, return within 1 month.
SVR = See restrictions, outward 1 day (but overnight stay allowed - see T&Cs), return within 1 month.
Advance Singles are only valid on the train(s) specified on the ticket, plus apporporiate trains to connect, where applicable.

I suggest:

NOT - CFD Off Peak Return (SVR) Rte: Sheffield. £22.90 (Valid at or after 0430) (Finish 'short' at WKF)
WKF - CAR Advance Sgl Rte: EC& Connections £12.45 (Available on 0917 / 1216 / 1414 from WKF, change at LDS)
CAR - WKF Advance Slg Rte: EC& Connections £12.45 (Available on 0618 from CAR, change at LDS) (Specify to avoid OUT when booking this)

Total price = £47.80

But you do lose flexibility. Allow plenty of time to change at WKF on your ouward journey.

(NOT = Nottingham; CAR = Carlisle, WKF = Wakefield Westgate; CFD = Castleford; OUT = Outwood)

Best place for fares advice is this Fares & Ticketing site. You normally get an answer within a couple of hours :)
