Class 101 in BR Green + Whiskers
I am in the process of repainting the recent BR Green livery plus small yellow warning panels version of the Class 101 into the preceding "whiskered" version.
I am as yet not totally clear as to whether these had the original BR Lion on Wheel symbol or the later BR Roundel. Therefore I would welcome any suggestions and/or comments?
I also understand that these were originally out-shopped with no "whiskers" but with the BR Lion on Wheel symbol. However can anyone advise whether all units were originally in this first livery?

Re: Class 101 in BR Green + Whiskers
Took this from "The Railcar Association" website .............
"Vehicles were turned out mainly in Brunswick Green with three cream bands, one at the bottom edge of the body, the second cutting a line through the window pillars at the base of the sliding ventilator windows, sweeping down at the cab front corners to form a waist height line below the cab windows. The third band was placed above window level as before. Speed whiskers were not originally carried but appeared in time. Later some cars appeared in the more traditional style of lining, with two bands of cream, one broader band at waist height and the other narrower band just above window level.
When new the BR lion on wheel symbol was carried amidships on power cars only, this later giving way to the neater BR roundel, again on power cars only."
Looks like the Lion & Wheel when new, being replaced during service with the roundel.

You beat me to it Kev, I was just about to paste in the same section. Ruf, have you got 'Dawn of the Diesels Part 1'? Bottom of P44 is a shot of side-by-side 101s, one with whiskers and one without. The non-whiskered version has the cream lining that sweeps up from the bottom outer corners of the windscreens, the whiskered one has the simple horizontal cream stripe. Sorry, can't make out the roundels. Dave.

Re: Class 101 in BR Green + Whiskers
OK I will adopt the BR Lion on Wheel totem for the whiskered 101s, and review my approach to the pre whiskered units.
Many thanks for the comments, etc.

Re: Class 101 in BR Green + Whiskers
Ruf, reading that quote from "The Railcar Association", I read it as "the whiskers came later", as did the 'roundel'
so would tend to think they appeared around the same time.
Hence the early 'pre-whisker' would have the 'Lion & Wheel', but the 'whisker' would have the 'roundel'
I may be wrong, but that's my take on it.
Just found this, it's a 'whisker' with 'roundel'. will keep looking for the 'pre-whisker'.

OK, not a photo but a sketch of an early style 'pre-whisker' showing a 'Lion & Wheel'. (best I can do for now)

But note that the photograph above appears to be a restored example, the exhaust system is a modified one and there seems to be high intensity headlight in the centre, so the livery details might not be as per the original.

Some original photos.

(Above) A four-car set forming a Newcastle-Middlesborough train approaches Monkwearmouth station in August 1958. The bodyside displays the original BR insignia consisting of a British lion embracing a flanged wheel. (text as it is on page with pic)
And a later whiskered one with roundel (1963)

Re: Class 101 in BR Green + Whiskers
The roundel (and the ferret with dartboard) was introduced mid 1956 but did not come into general use until 1957.
Anything built before 1957 would have the ferret on unicycle and this probably continued until transfer stocks were used up.

The unit in the top pic has this
on the side.
Of note, they only put the emblem on the motor unit, not on the trailer.

Hello Ruf
Good that you are reskinning the green whiskered 101 with the Lion over Wheel crest. This early version is missing from the otherwise wonderful liveries that Derek included in the 101 pack.
Great, thanks

Re: Class 101 in BR Green + Whiskers
After a week away on my hols - to my wife's annoyance I took a laptop in order to minimise MSTS withdrawal symptoms and completed the repaints.
However based on previous comments I have used the later BR Roundel. I will be completing tests on the consists prior to upload later this week.
Might now do a set with no whiskers and the Lion+Wheel emblem!

Hi Ruf
In my last post I assumed you were talking about the Railworks 101 (hence my reference to Derek's 101 pack). I now realize that you were probably talking about a MSTS 101 class, right? If so that would be a pity (for me)

This was the case that as a general rule of thumb across the 1st Gen range, Powered units had the crests on and Non Powered (Trailers and Driving Trailers) did not
