Is Evening star 92203 or another one

Post by train »

Hi
Now back on the right thread from the screenshots. Is this new info about Black prince having evening stars frames,as it has
never been mentioned in any of the Mags before,This sounds a bit of an exclusive to me ,certainlly it would make the Headlines.
Perhaps they could do an interview with David Shepherd.
Oh well at least Evening star is back in steam albeit with it's wrong boiler,or is that its right one.The plot thickens

Maybe the NRM can do a swop with black prince.MMM better not tell them.Heck i'm confused.Hope this is not a late April Fool

I just posted this on Sly's thread but this might also be a good place to start looking for differences -

Hi
I would find it strange if Black Prince had Evening Stars frames.
There has always been rumors over the frames that they were too badly damaged to repair.
Something like £1600 was required, and the WR(BR) wouldn't authorize.
So another set were used.
If this happened I would have imagined they would have been cut quietly and quickly.
There is a photo taken at Crewe dated 18 Dec, that would appear to show Crewe had started to repair the frames.
Cheers

According to Wiki, there is also the rumour that 92220 swapped identities with 92009 after the
shunting accident, but there has been no citation as yet.

Hi
Yes thats the one .... if it was done over the christmas holidays that year.
Still seems unlikely as it would have involved a few workers at Crewe.... unless they were paid 'hush' money.

Hi
Interesting this topic, its amazing what you can find on these forums, especially under the Screenshot one,and yet i only read about it
last night, anyway if you look at the picture above of Black Prince, under the Cab number 92203,you will see a Square Hole,if i am
not mistaken that is where the Token was for working the S and D back in 1966,when Evening Star hauled the Pines Express, and other
Journeys along that route.Did 92203 ever work the S and D and if so that theory has gone out of the window.

The more likely explanation is that and what i am likely to believe is that the real Evening star was repaired at Crewe. As according to
the NRM ,Ray Towell did say in Steam Railway that the NRM one had 92220 stamped all over it,and i thought Evening Star had black
cylinder covers not Green.

For me to finsh this thread the Real Evening Star is at Swindon, and always will be.If Evening star was Overhauled in the future then
maybe the repair at Crewe could be discovered. It would be good to see it back in steam,i would certainly give some money if Steam
Railway started an appeal .Perhaps even Tysleley Loco works could do the Work.

Yes she did, along with other surviving members of her class, these were 92220 (obviously), 92212, 92214 & 92245.

Why will she always be at Swindon, until very recently she could only be seen at York.

I doubt Steam Railway would ever launch an appeal on 92220. 9F's aren't allowed on the mainline and even if they were they would be limited to slow maximum speed limits. And why launch an appeal for a 9F that could only run on preserved railways when we have other examples that can do the same. 3 9F's are currently in operational order... would be far cheaper just to repaint, renumber and rename one for a while than restoring 92220. Although i'm all in favour of all locomotives being overhauled every so often, realistically it's never going to happen. My bets are on Steam Railway launching an appeal on 6229 'Duchess of Hamilton' in the next few years, there have been so many hints that they might do so.....
