Which of the ex-railways companies has the most preserved Steam and Heritage diesel loco'son lines in the uk?
(doesn't matter if the loco's static or in bits for overhaul as long as it's preserved)
The companies i was thinking of was

LNER
LMS
GWR
Southern
British rail

I was pottering about round the house and wondered it was just a spur of the moment thing. So I thought I'd ask

I'm just curious thats all

Probably the GWR and it's constituents due to the location of Barry scrapyard deep in GWR territory.

Thats what I thought but you never know.

I would say British Rail.
There are quite a few preserved steamers that were built under
the British Rail banner, and all your preserved mainline diesels were
built under British Rail.

According to figures I have, over 50% of the steam loco's rescued from Woodhams were not GWR loco's.
Check out Alan Warren's "BARRY SCRAPYARD,The Preservation Miracle", published in 1989.

Pretty much every railway I've visited has a Bulleid Pacific in some form or other

GWR - 135 locos
LMS - 83 locos
SR - 80 locos
BR - 46 locos
LNER - 37 locos

BUT - it should be noted that these figures only include standard-gauge steam locos that survived to carry a BR capital-stock number. It also dosn't include new-builds, but it does include locos subsequently dismantled to provide parts for new-builds (eg. Maindy Hall and Willington Hall). Adding diesels would, of course, give the BR total a great boost.

Not if driven properly though.

Just to add some more info, a similar topic appeared on another forum not too long ago.

The most of any one class steam wise is:

Austerity 0-6-0T with apparently 70 examples surviving.
Bulleid lights comes in second with 20.
Black 5 - 18
GWR 5700 Pannier Tank - 16
Standard 4MT Tank - 15

With diesels apparently the most preserved class is the class 37 with 48 examples. Class 47 clocks up 36 with Class 31's having 26 examples.

I would have thought 08's would be the most common diesel, every preserved railway seems to have one or two.

With 08's there are 102.
