I read that mallard is to leave the NRM in york for Locomotion in Shildon. It's hoped that the A1 60163 Tornado is to haul the A4 up the ECML to shildon. Mallard is to stay at Shildon for the forseable future. Yet the Nrm claim It's their core exhibit.

bare in mind it is still undicided how long mallard is to stay over there, but i wonder what will replace her while shes gone

Of course the next question is what will replace them?

Personally i think it's a good move. A lot of people seem against the idea of it leaving the NRM for display elsewhere, though i would think their reactions would be different if it was to return her to steam. A good move for people who don't get the chance to get to York. She has been at York for a long long time now, nice to see a change.

You have a valid point there. It's rumoured that mallard is to be restored to working order in 2012. I personally would have 4472 in the nrm and green arrow out in traffic and change them overevery 7-10 years

I'd be very surprised if Mallard receives an overhaul that close, specially with 60007, 60009 & 60019 all being in service by then. Very little work for 3, so there will be none for 4 (although any tour with Mallard is sure to sell out).

I had heard rumours of 6229 being one of the next to perhaps steam, i can't say if it's true but with her and 4472 running, the chances of Mallard being released are slim. Not to mention the other NRM fleet currently operating which consists of 30777 'Sir Lamiel' , 850 'Lord Nelson', 70013 'Oliver Cromwell', 3440 'City of Truro', O4 No. 63601, LSWR Well Tank No. 30587 plus one or two others i've forgotten to mention. Then you've got the 4F and T9 aswell as 4472 undergoing overhauls.

60019 and 6007 are working fine 60009 is at crewe in bits for it's overhaul. 70013 is working on the mainline. 4771 to be honest proberly won't see the mainline again. 4472 your looking at 2015 before thats out if the nrm lucky. 49395 is due out into traffic in may.

Last time I was at the NRM 4472 was in millions of bits all over the workshop.

still is and not likely to change for a while yet. thats for sure. How ever mallard only needs a boiler ticket or so it's reckonend. If it was done up to mainline working order it would better to do it to how it looked in Br days with it's valence's off as the centre bearing can get air, where as though with the valances on they had a tendency to overheat and fail.

By this time next year 4472 should be about ready for running in on the ELR. The new inner firebox is complete and ready to attached to the rest of the rebuilt boiler. The recently discovered wheel problem is now being attended to as well. The front bogie and trailing truck are back in and the other million bits are starting to become an engine again. I expect this is the most comprehensive overhaul this loco has ever had. I know of a few other locos where piecemeal repairs and bodges have accumlated over the years and eventually you have take the loco back to square one or it will just get worse an worse.

As for Mallard its last ticket was for a limited number of steamings because of its condition so i expect there would be more to it than just getting a new boiler ticket. Even so unlike 4472 its had 3 careful owners and has run in preservation which so it's probably not too bad.

As for 6229 i think the prospect of it on the mainline in it's new clothes would be difficult to resist butthe NRM will probably want it on diplay for a while yet,

Personally i would like to see something older running like the l&Y tank or NER 1275 but most enthusiasts seem more intrested animal stickered engines.

Your proberly right there whether it'll be on the elr next remains to be seen at present.

Boilers/Fireboxs are worst job as only specialist firms can deal with them. Never say never.

Everyone has there own likes and dislikes I'm a LNER person As I like alot ot Gresley's work. But I do like large loco's like any enthusiast would. But it would be nice to see something else out.

For a big loco Winston churchill for a small one maybe a tank of some description.
