IEP postponed

I concept was quite frankly poor anyway, hopefully a cheaper alternative can be found after the election. Of course the DfT have already wasted a lot of money on consultancy fees...

Good, lets hope any budget cuts for the programme come in the right places. Its quite clear that a train of better quality can be built for far less. See the rest of Europe as an example. I do fear that we may end up with something just as bad, only less of it.
The most recent Modern Railways has a fantastic article on life extension programmes. It suggests there's a chance we could see HSTs for 20 years to come. The joy of a simple design.

I'd love to see them life extended, in 20 years time it's conceivable that hydrogen powered trains will exist which will then mean the old stock can be phased out for clean, efficient stock. There's enough mixed powered stock in the pipeline to not require the IEP.
