Yes, they are still at work on the branch. They do occaisionaly get replaced with a Desiro on some Sundays or if a problem arises.
The last day of service is May 22nd, where there will be special goings on at Brockenhurst station (according to the Daily Echo)
Andy.

Hmm. . 22 May I guess will be pretty busy. I'll get down before then but when the nights are lighter so the journey back to Wolves isn't in darkness !

Yes get there quick while you still can. Ive been unlucky twice with a desiro running. But i have been lucky aswell, went 1 weekend and 1497 started having trouble so 1498 was brought out to continue

saw both in same day. Will be such a shame when do finish, i hope they will be saved. Be good if knights could have them. Il certainly be there on the last day and i will catch the very last service aswell, just to say i did it, end of an era and because of my age ive missed most of it
Cheers all

Just. There's only weeks until they finish. If you want to get them, then you best be quick!
On a note, 1497 "Freshwater" failed on the branch today, with buses running the rest of the days services.
Andy.

I went down the other week - truly brilliant, first time I had been on a slammer for years.

The Farewell was on 22nd May, both units out, 1498 in the morning and 1497 in the afternoon until 10.14 at night.

It's all over.

That is a shame and I believe it's a stupid decision to use the 158 during the week. It should be electric all the time. No point having the rail otherwise.

Why are they throwing away perfectly good units?
Oh yes - safety. Someone might fall out the door.
Except that, since this daft rule was introduced, there has never been an instance of someone falling out.
Whatever happened to common sense?

My understanding was it was due to the decreasing availability of spare parts.

Central Door Locking probably has a lot to do with no one falling out..

Aren't these units due their next overhaul? In which case I suspect that SWT looked at the costs involved and elected to retire them.
