The only real confusion between EMT and SWT I think is the 158s/159s, as they are in the same livery. Whilst the HSTs and Meridiens are in a variation, they are nothing like anything SWT runs. 153s and 156s are in the Desiro style, but nothing like a Desiro. It's not like we're not used to seeing corporate liveries on trains anyway, especially First and more recently National Express, Arriva too although oviously they chose another livery for XC which is nice.

Dark Brown with a Red stripe? I'd call it more black, but that sounds like Fragonset, especially on a 31 (they also had 47s, 33s and 73s in that livery). They were a spot hire company who did short term (relative) leases to TOCs of locos and coaching stock. Their main work was providing 47s and Mk2s to MML and 31s and Mk2s to Wessex and First North Western. They merged with Merlin Rail to become FM rail, then went out of business. A lot of their assets went to Victa Westlink, who have also ceased, and Mainline Rail, who are also no more. A lot of the working 31s ended up with NR, with most working 47s going to either DRS or Cotswold Rail. Some of the fleet ended up with Nemesis Rail, including their 45 and some 33s and 73s.

It happens. NX have quite a habbit of it though. I remember when MML were refurbishing HSTs and it was possible to see 3 liveries in one set (old MML, New MML, unbranded VXC), and I once saw a 'one' hauled set with 5 liveries (painted 'one', vinyled 'one', Anglia, Intercity, VWC). Then again, EMT do it, it's common to see HSTs with mixtures of MML and EMT liveries. I don't think I've actually seen a full set in EMT colours yet. I'm sure I've seen FGW HSTs with mixtures too, and that's before we get to how long it was before TOCs stopped having Intercity mixed in with their own liveries after privatisation (Anglia always did, hence above). It's the problem with loco hauled stock (including HSTs) as they are not fixed formation so chopping and changing often occurs due to maintenance needs (it's their big advantage too, if a loco or coach has a problem, it can just be replaced without having to stop the whole set). Locos and Powercars are especially prone, particularly when repainting and refurbishment take place at the same time as they will be done seperatly. Even units arn't immune though. Oviously having two units in multiple in different liveries is pretty common, but with the Sprinters, one unit with cars in different liveries (or even of different types) sometimes happens, especially if one car is damaged.

Of cource, I'm sure it would be good use of staff and shunter time to reform the set to make sure that at least the two none NX liveried coaches are together  .

I seem to remember stories from yesteryear where depot shunters would move units about to make oddly painted sets. One such time when three class 309's were sat at Liverpool all in different colours. Looking forward to the c2c shunters getting their act together and seeing a 12 cars set in white c2c, purple c2c and the green unit colours together. Have also seen a 12 car unit where the two outer ends were in white c2c and the middle set was purple.

Cheers
