London St Pancras International - Ugly?

Post by petermakosch »

Does anyone think London St Pancras Internation looks ugly?

Kings Cross looks great with it's large double spanning roof, however being in the station of St Pancras really took the look higher and bigger. Then came along the Eurostar so a change in the station had to be made. But why not carry on the roof like it used to be?

This just looks wrong. A nice large shed with something that looks like a giant has trodden on it at the mouth.

I don't see why they couldn't just continue with the original look:

Any other thoughts?

Have a look at the station of Antwerp or Liège...

Hi Pete

I've edited your post to change the second photo into a link, as it's much larger than the maximum size allowed (800 x 600).

Gee, what a waste !!! With a flat roof area that BIG, they would have the largest solar power collector panel in the world - could have powered half the Underground !!!

The domestic end is awful but i think the international end is just about the best in the UK.

It only looks like a mess from the sky in my view. When you're on the station I think it works fine. The original structure has been refurbished at great cost to its former glory so I don't really see the problem. If one day we want to only use the original train shed the new flat roof can be removed.

Antwerp is quite a station. I only visited during the project to build through platforms underneath was being carried out. Although great there isn't much to compare as the projects were completely different. The platforms are below ground level at Antwerp to make it a through station. I'd love to go back at take a look.

Cheers,
Ali

I don't think it's to bad to be honest but it does look a bit odd the way there are 2 completely seperate buildings. It should be good to see Kings Cross when it's finished in 2012.
