Transpennine-Swindon units progress

Post by Timcourt1 »

Learning this as I go so its a bit slow- Using TSM (learning loco's as I go) and PSP7 (Learning this as I go) and setting up the ENG file (ditto!)

Have managed to produce the 124 Driving Motor Composite, no interior just yet since I only learned Transparencies etc today and the texture is very basic but wil get better as I go.

Had a weekend off the route so I could do this - back on getting the route ready to send to matt this week so don't worry.

Let me know if you want the 6 car unit uploaded when its done.

PS- Thanks to Ian Morgan for the Bogie Textures (Good to have a bit od standardisation) and Buffy for pointing out my stupid animation errors

Went for the 124 first since this is the one I like and were the mainstay at Hull BG for many years, also this was the most difficult and if I can do this one then the others will be easier.

This one will be a full 6 car set, once thats done all I have to do is build 1 extra coach and a few different cab ends to make the Swindon and one other Trans Pennine style.

I think this one and one of the swindon units came out in green too

They had very comfy seats thought.

South Yorkshire PTE used to subsidise BR for the local ines round here, Doncaster, Sheffield, Barnsley etc. Donny to Sheffield usedto be 60 p RETURN, but I am talking 20 years ago.

I have fond memories of the old 123/124 units.

Bob,

I'll be doing the 123's too, it will be some time yet but i will be making the full unit in exterior texture only then making the guts after.

The non driving motor coach should be a giggle though!

Wanted to have a go at loco building and figured these are missing from several rotues itineraries- will go well on any of the lines covering leeds- manch etc

John,

Perhaps I can return a favour for you then since I want to release these as a pack if i can, will be the 123/4 units, both variants of both calsses with the different cab ends - I have some historical data which shows how the sets were formed, like the 123's with their different ends.

Now I have the 124 like this I can do the door ended version of the 124 and then move on and do the Lecky version which had a slightly flatter front end and sliding double doors.

Alaways liked those... I'll be working on this much more as of next week (that last statement could tell you something about mideast too)

When I was still an apprentice electrician (do you remember apprenticeships) at Doncaster loco works 'The Plant', I spent several weeks working in the DMU shop on a variety of DMU's. Mainly the Derby lightweights, but I remember with fondness the Transpennine Units.

As I mentioned above they had incredibly comfy seats, especialy first class, which were made use off during the dinner break. (Strickly unofficial - apprentice trick!)As the units were on stands its was possable to walk under these units....I remember one dinner sitting with a few chums and we heard a rattle under the unit we were sitting in, only to have one of the floor access doors burst open and we were attacked by another 'mad' apprentice wealding a fire extinguiser. Tea covered in CO2 foam is not very tasty.

Sounds like you had fun, you know, the more I read about these units the more fascinated i get, when I look at what they had to power them and the performance which in itself was a feat, they were apparrently renowned for their accelleration and had a few innovative features like a crude Centralised warning system like aircraft which told the driver that each engine was running and coupled to the gearbox, he could also select the starter to start all engines on one side.

6 car 6 engine DMU - not bad for a unit running in the early 60's - cant be much wrong with the design since most of todays DMU's use the same design principles too!

I remember the 123's working out of Paddington to Oxford c. 1970 .... the buffet car was missing from those units which had one originally so they were formed one 4-car and one 3 car :-?

Wish I'd seen them in green 8)

Of corurse they all migrated to Hull.

If you find a cure for the obects missing through windows in TSM I for one would like to know :P

John,

Tsm works well although I had to make the cab sides independant of the front end:)

Have the model basics done and textured, just need to attempt to make the wheels on the bus go round and round!

Screenshots of the full unit are in the "screenshots" forum

Same problem with railbus :-?

Remember to set number of frames at one more than the 'sides' on the wheel and you'll be home and dry .... probably :P
