McLaren???? What was that?

Post by Viivi »

I just finished watching the F1 qualifying, and of course, supporting Finnish drivers (Kimi & Mika), I keep a close eye on McLaren..... and today, they qualify 10th and 11th?

Did anyone else watch this?

I watched part of it - thought it really funny when the new guy got 3 points on his licence 13 seconds into his F1 career! :)

At least they got some point from the race , didn't expect that - they really have had a bad year.

Come back Mika all is forgiven

Every team goes thru its ups and downs. Back in 95 it was all Williams and Damon Hill, then it was McLarens turn, and now its Ferari.

When they bring in the new regulations it'll help make F1 more competative like it used to be, rather than the two hour parade it has become.

I prefer BTTC and WRC, altho BTTC took a dive in 98 when most of the teams left and only left Ford and Vauxhall at the top teams. They changed the rules and regulations and now the teams are coming back.

In Motorsport the more money you have the better chance you have of winning, and that not the way it should be. Like I said, the new regulations should help solve this problem.

Does anyone knoe when the new regulations are to be brought in?

As long as technology dominates F1 any rule changes won't fundamentally stop the 200 mph traffic jam. I rarely watch it now, I prefer 'lesser' forms of motorsport. At least you see some overtaking.

The new regulations will make it fairer than it is. Im not 100% exactly what they are but this is the jist of it:

limited number of engines per race weekend.

Limited Number of Tires.

Limited number of chassis.

This will hopefully stop teams like ferrari using new parts every day while smaller teams have to use the same parts all race weekend.

For years they have tried to change the rules and regulations, to get the cars slower. But, year after year, they have made the faster again... and this is now, with cars that aren't as safe as they used to be. On the other hand, the danger is part of the while attraction in the motorsport. I don't care how many ppl say otherwise, most people find the accidents exciting. No matter how bad they are.

It is a tough one in my opinion, if you look at it as a team sport, where it is not just the driver that wins, it is how the team performed as a whole. This is pretty much what we see now (except for the money, of course). If you only make one type of car, give it to the driver, and make them go around the track, then it will be up to the driver, how the whole team succeeds.

I am not quite sure how I think it should be. Any rules can be bent, and have been bent. I like the sport, don't much care about the politics involved :-)

Hear hear Viivi. I think the rules manipulation to slow the cars down has been wrong from the start. Reducing engine power and tyre contact-patch has done nothing to enliven the sport... the reverse in fact. All these things make overtaking less, not more likely.

What needs to be done is to increase the contact patch (wide slicks again) so that cars can grip the corners and brake later. Remove aerofoil 'wings' from the front and rear so that cars are less affected by dirty air in front of them. And finally remove ALL computer assistance from the car. Traction control being the stupidest thing to happen to F1 in years.

Mrs Fodda and I have seen every F1 race since 1990. And this year, I just feel jaded after each one. For the first time last weekend since 1990 I didn't bother watching qualifying... I watched a videoed film whilst it was on, because I just couldn't be arsed.

And with MS being gifted titles, wins and cash galore... it just isn't a driver's championship any more. I hope he quits this year... I don't think I could stand another few years of his whinging cheating ways. I remember his outrageous behaviour in 1994, 95, 97, 2001 and 2002. Not a worthy World Champ.

AND... his record breaking total GPs per year will have to have one win removed because of cheating, and the rest taken into account because we can't discount this all happening before. AND Mansell's record was over 16 races... MS's over 17. Much easier for the cheat.

Yet another rant over... fo now.

P.S. I thought the best bit of the race which seemed to be totally overlooked by all was Button's fantastic start and move round the outside of turn one to gain 7 places and end up ahead of Montoya by the end of turn 3! The only overtaking in the whole race.
