I am not sure i'd agree that MS/Kuju aren't supporting MSTS - we've had two or three patches plus the GMAX pack released so there's definitely support there - Microsoft have never ever supported anything to the extent that Auran are, in fact there aren't many companies like Auran around so they are more the exception than the example.

Auran could have done a lot better getting it on to shelves frankly, the release of Trainz outside the US and Aus has been an utter disaster in my opinion and that alone will hurt Trainz in a big way.

Fly! suffered similar problems - Microsoft are just plain better at marketing and getting it in to the hands and minds of the people than anyone else. Fly! was fantastic (I have both 1 and 2) but it wasn't pushed anywhere near as hard as Flight Sim was, given that Flight Sim already had massive momentum behind it anyway. Trainz is getting even less push, I have yet to see any mention of Trainz anywhere in the press and yet MSTS shows up fairly regularly.

THAT I think is the main reason that MSTS is more popular.

Most people don't know about getting it direct from Auran, most people don't know who Auran is, most people probably don't know what Trainz is either. If you aren't in the online community, or you aren't fairly active in the online community, the chances are good that you don't know much about Trainz (may come as a surprise that a lot of the potential users to such programs don't actually search the web looking for them).

So all in all, i'm very disappointed in the effort put forth to shout about their work, after all the effort put in to it in the first place - and if you don't give it about as much airtime as MSTS gets, it's always going to look like the toy little brother product, whether it's as good or a billion times better in reality.

Rant Over :)

I would like to know where these 2 or 3 patches are, there has been one update to my knowledge.GMax plug in only came about ,because they sussed that there may be competition from Trainz.
How many emails has anyone had in response to queries from microsoft regarding msts,i have had quite a few in regards to Trainz from Auran.
Your only looking at Trainz from a british perspective,no-one really gives a toss about the UK market anyway. As long as the US sales are bouyant they know profit is inevitable, that applys to msts and trainz.

The best stuff for msts is yank, that includes third party routes and loco`s etc.The same will be true of Trainz, bigger purchasing base = higher ratio of creators.

Its all railways,so i dont care whether its a route in new zealand or a loco of a us narrow gauge scenic railway,i enjoy them all.

No ranting ,just reasoned discussion.

I searched for 'Auran Trainz' and 'Trainz' on Amazon yesterday and turned up no results. It doesn't really matter who else has heard of your product or not heard of your product, but if Amazon don't know about it then there really is something fundamentally wrong with your marketing.

Is it me or are people just plain thick. There is enough information out there ,telling you over and over that its available direct online from Aurans shop.

I didnt hear about msts last year from advertising,i heard by contacts and word of mouth.

If anyone really wants the sim and its not just an excuse for a whinge, then buy it direct.

I know that Trainz is available from the Auran site, I downloaded the demo from there and damn fine it looks too. But if you've not got a credit card (as opposed to a debit card) or broadband/patience then the way most people are going to get hold of something is in a shop. I was in my local branch of Game today and looking at the list of forthcoming releases for July, there were a hell of a lot of games that I've not heard of and would not want even if I had, but . all mention of anything to do with Trainz.

Regardless of the quality of the product - and it is very good from what I've seen - if you can't get it to people in the way they want it, it'll have problems. Remember Betamax and VHS.

yes, but:

to buy from auran, you need to (and I'm not saying any/all of these apply to me personally)

* have a payment method which auran accept (credit card)

* be able to pay is aus dollars (ok on a credit card, although i'm personally not sure/keen on paying for anything other than in UK £'s)

* be able to trust the online transaction

* work out what the actual price is, after you've done the conversion, added the cost of air mail, and the CHANCE of import/vat taxes added if the customs in the UK get a bit money hungry (it does seem to happen sometimes, sadly).

* order now, and you'll still not have sp3, so there's little point ordering today to then have to order a cd and pay postage on that too (and go through all the above things), or have a 300mb ish download (would take me atleast 40 hours, and atleast 20 reconnects).

I'd want to buy (a UK version of) trainz, from a UK retailer (probably Amazon), and I'm prepared to wait. However, if none of the retailers know about it, then it simply doesn't bode very well. Amazon should have the product available for pre-order by now - they don't, and to me that points to something being very wrong with the "getting it to the uk" from auran/arxel/whoever.

Personally however I'm waiting for review code (for my gamespaper site), so that's the main reason I've not gone out and bought it. If I had to *buy* it though, I'd probably not really want to buy from abroad - I dont think I've ever bought anything from abroad, and that's probably what'd put me off.

Fair enough, but if, for whatever reason, you can't 'purchase it from wherever', then you need it to be available in a shop. And that, so far, isn't happening.
