Class 83

Post by thestoat »

Hi all,

After a bit of encouragement (thanks, Tim!), I've done a bit more work on my Class 83, which would go nicely with Tim's up and coming Class 82! There's still a lot of work to be done yet. The bogies are completely wrong - they're from a Class 81. I only used them just to 'get the feel'. Does anyone have any side view pictures of the Class 83 bogie? My 3D bogie engineering isn't up to much, particularly with the complicated Class 83 bogie. Anyway, here's the on going project:

Great... But...
Is it just me or does the angle of the lower half of the cab look vaguely Class 86 style?

Just a thought. :)

I modelled the loco using actual Class 83 diagrams and the lower half is raked back at the right angle. But you're right, in that pic it looks more upright! Maybe it's the way the screenshot was taken. I'll rake it back some more if it doesn't look right in the future. Here's a couple more screenshots - look any different from this angle?

The cab looks much better now. More of an 83 feel. :)

Managed to get some more work done on the Class 83 (in between decorating and my 'real' job!). The first three show the recent progress on the loco and the final picture shows work having started on the alpha channels.

Jeff Ashton has sent me sounds of Class 81-51 (thanks Jeff!) and, hopefully, he'll upload them for us soon!

Just posting this really to bang it back to the top.
But seriously hows it all going...Class 83....Class84....81-85 sounds (they are a must absolutely sick of that dreadfull Acela horn)...I've done a (reasonable )cabview which I will hopefully be uploading in the next couple of days
But its all new to me...my inspiration has been the fanatasic merseyside route....and the excellent maroon MK1s...throw in a few green 40s and I'm in heaven. :fadein:

It's all coming along! I'm probably like most modellers, as you build your model, you see all the flaws and faults that other people probably can't see! And I'm trying to get around a few of those at the moment. Here's a few screen shots anyway. I'm currently trying to combat a problem of the yellow around the windows being darkened on the blue locos.

Highlight the window stip in TSM then split part, delete then re apply ploygon smooting and it will be fine, you can then join these back up to the body and the effect will be gone, unless your window strip is bent vertically.

Thanks, Tim. I gave that a try but it only had partial effect and only at one end (!?). Maybe it's the way I build 'em..... I got around the problem by reducing the number of materials used on the loco and converting the cab window material to AlphaCrcfrm. Here's the latest:

Hi
Just keeping the thread going.
Now we have another fantastic route for these babies....NWE.
My favourites will be the half yellow panel.

Was also wondering whether you'd done the engine file yet?...as I'm doing a cabview(class87) but will offer a kind of class 81-86 version too.
And had a lot of trouble with the class 87 (no engine brake, poor lighting)
but works fine with Tims Class 82s.
Hopeing to upload cabview on wednesday.
Cheers
Jon :)
