Won't the ENG file have to be set up for it to burn deisel fuel or can it be coal fired too?

Thats the new steam thingy that I think David Wardale was or is proposing to build. Was in Steam Railway a couple of months ago.

It's supposed to be an Oil burner - I can't think how to do this in MSTS though, so it will have to be coal fired.

Yes, it's the proposed 'Silver Arrow' Class 5 Advanced Technology locomotive - supposedly to have the same power curve as a 'Deltic'. Whilst I'm not sure I totally agree with the concept, if you're gonna build new ones, why not make them go?

From the web site - major features include:
  • High speed capability (113 mph operating speed, 125 mph design speed), with ability to keep up with modern rail traffic.
High power to weight ratio combined with good adhesion.
    Wide route availability.
Simplicity, reliability, easy maintenance and servicing.
500 km (300 mile) range before water replenishment; 750 km (470 miles) when operating under fuel under full load.
Low overall operating and maintenance costs.
    Conformance to latest safety regulations.
    Good crew conditions.
Diesel or gas oil fuel (option for coal fired version).
Ability to run 80,000+ km (50,000+ miles) per annum with minimum maintenance.

Where will the real loco operate? Not in the UK surely?

Yeah, a bit like the turbomotive 2 project. It isn't a 'proper' i.e. 'heritage' steam loco; if new traction is required it would be best to stick to proven classic designs; you could probably get three new black 5s for the same price and in the long term prove to be more reliable. Or hey, how about getting some existing locos into working order instead? It may be an interesting engineering exercise, but I know what I'd like to see.

Edit: That is in real life of course; do what you like in the sim :)

The plan is that this new build will be able to operate in the same diagram as a regular diseasel or sparkbox service - thus obviating the concerns of the operators about 'slow steam locos' disrupting their planned services.

Additionally, the lower maintenance overheads would make charter trains more profitable. Because you don't have to slaivshly reproduce 19th century manufacturing techniques, it should also be cheaper to build.

I'm not sure I like the idea myself, but since I'll probably never get the chance to see it in the flesh anyway, I thought I'd build one!

Don't worry Martin, I'll finish the Manning Wardle first!

It won't work as an oil burner, I tried it with the U mogul once it just crashed MSTS :(

Whether the water in the boiler is heated by oil jets or burning coal, it is still a steam engine so best to ignore the source of combustion or as Eddie found, MSTS will get it's knickers in a twist.

I wonder if anyone at Kuju even knew about oil burning steamers???

What about Natural gas fired, I remember reading years ago about a design of a Caprotti geared 3 cylindered "9F" that was to run on gas...

... then theres also my own 4-8-4 design on the drawing board

I'm sure the forums on T-S.com are great for lots of subjects but there are only so many hours in a day. I can't browse two sites at once, I can't get access to the T-S.com forums at work either. .
