Hi everyone.
I've been reading a few of the Flightsim Forums and I've come across a few tips which I thought might be useful for some of you on here...
Take a screenshot of an airport, a city and a countryside in your FS2004 at settings with which you are happy with.
Open FSX and tweak the sliders to achieve the same levels of detail, number of buildings, trees, etc. Then save that config - fly and enjoy. Try moving up some sliders if they show things you want to see.
Eventaully we are all going to have to buy a new computer - but I strongly urge anyone to wait until after Vista is released.
It will be like getting a new FS program for free.
Also it's going to be two or three or four months before the addons catch up with FSX.
The FSX installation will tailor itself specifically to your machine. The CFG that is installed should match best effects possible on your machine.
Try resetting everything back to the as installed default options, then if you want to raise some aspects, you'll then have to back off others, or suffer the FPS cosequences, and it's a fine balancing act.
Turn off bloom, flare, and all shadow effects, but I'd recommend keeping the 3D clouds, as they're not the frame-hogs you might expect.
The autogen can be a real killer. In FS9 the max objects possible per tile is 600, in FSX this has been upped to 6,000, and many are higher poly objects than FS9. e.g. Trees are now 3 polys, whereas in FS9 they were 2 previously.
The equivalent autogen setting for FS9 maxed out, is 'Sparse' in FSX.
One thing you should definitely do post install is defrag your hard disk thoroughly as FSX seems to make a real hash of file placement.
A contiguous fixed-size pagefile will substantially improve performance here.
Another recommendation would be to stop all unnescessary background processes & services.
Lastly the recorded audio quality is quite high, if you're finding the sim stutters just before audio is played try turning down your sound quality.
P.S. Be aware of old addons, ASM based objects have been deprecated
and will thoroughly trash your frame rates.
Kind regards,
-Alex.

Thanks for that Alex, interesting reading!
Must admit with the default settings it looks good enough (though the textures are much more blurry than they were on '04) and the frame rate hits its max 15fps setting consistently, it's only occasionally it seems to jump and stutter around a bit but that could be my machine doing something funky.

The missions are great, and I have taken a look at the SDK, and they seem *reasonably* easy to produce as long as you have computer experience - though any audio has to be recorded, so you might want a few friends to assist!

Yep! been playing with it a little while now, I can coax a usable flight out of it, you do need to do a bit of a slider shuffle to get it where you want it though.
The only thing I have trouble with is trying to engage/disengage Autopilot Hold buttons while in turbulence, the head bounce effect is great but you try hitting those buttons while in rough air!
Also, if you have a Yoke or stick, make a FSx Specific setup and get used to it, it really saves alot of hassle when using the Point of View hat to find your way around the Instrument panel.
I can see this being quite Daunting for a new user though.

I had another play with the Demo last night. (FSX isn't released here until Thursday)
Unlike my first attempt, it was actually quite usable - getting 20fps most of the time in the Beaver - which seems to be the most complex model.
I don't know why you can't see out of the VC though - that would get old pretty quickly. Most of the keyboard shortcuts from FS9 seem to work the same, but the ATC window is very intrusive...
I'm getting a new Video Card today with twice as much RAM (GeForce 7600) so that should help even more.

From the readme:CaptainBazza wrote:Yes, you can - I mean the demo too. Like you, the full version doesn't arrive until Thursday, so sod the usual Thursday shopping expedition.I don't know why you can't see out of the VC though
Luckily, I no longer have a GeForce2 video card.Nvidia (http://www.nvidia.com/)
• Fireworks may have defined, square borders and appear blocky on nVidia GeForce2 with all driver versions.
• De Havilland Beaver windows may appear opaque in spot plane view on computers with nVidia GeForce2 video cards.
