I've got my mine .... FS10

Since the UKTS takeover of PC World, there's a month's free membership on offer with every sale :D

It was kept under the counter which is intriguing.

Anyone else got there's.

Told them I'd be back for a new computer tomorrow :D

My FSX arrived Thursday albeit from Play.com

Had a quick 30-40 minute blast on it. Pretty but seems very resource hungry.

I've got what I would still class as a fairly decent-spec machine (Pentium D930 3GHz Dual-Core with 2GB RAM and a 256MB 7800GT) but with the default aircraft with anything above medium on the graphics it was running poorly i.e. 10fps or less.

This doesn't bode well for any attempt to run Level-D, PMDG or FeelThere quality add-ons on this system. :(

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried :)

Arrived Thursday from Play.com, I have most of the sliders set between medium and high, autogen on the lowest (and it still makes Oxfordshire look like a rainforest!), road, sea and airport traffic on high, and no AI, and get 20fps. Can't complain!

The missions are great, and have real potential for third party addons.

Runs like an absolute dog on my machine so far, seemed to be tuning its settings down as it went too - I started out at Stapleford, found the M25 and turned north, followed to the M25/M11 junction and turned in to london following the M11, all doing this at about 700ft as I wanted to see the detail of the roads.

As I got past Loughton the detail of the roads went right down as if I was a bit higher (it looked like this detail earlier on which is why I was down to 700ft), eventually I couldn't really make the M11 out anymore, abandoned that and accelerated up to about 2k ft, it got slower and slower until it was taking 10 seconds to render a shot in the cockpit and eventually just died never responding again and had to be end-tasked.

My machine is Athlon64 3400, but the graphics is only a Geforce 5900 so it might not like the 5th gen card, could well do a lot better on a 6th or 7th gen card.

1gb ram, nothing else loaded, detail settings were turned up quite high though so next thing is to try turning them down and see what it runs like - but tbh i'm looking for its scenery detail so i'll just have to upgrade until I get a machine that does the job.

The detail on the roads now though is stunning, following the M25 to the M11/M25 junction which looked spot on, with cars driving on all the roads etc was superb, VFR might now finally be a true reality!

At least yours runs!

I keep getting a message when clicking the desktop icon saying, "Flight Simulator is not working with your video card. Verify you have the latest drivers installed for your video card. Flight Simulator will now exit"

I thought a Radeon 9600 PRO Turbo was a a fairly decent card?

I have heard reports that in some cases, FSX can run better with higher graphics settings - possibly worth a try!

That's what happens when they rush it out before Vista!

Mine has gone away for Xmas so hopefully there will be an optimisation patch before then.

Has anyone tried porting across addon aircraft such as LDS, PMDG etc. yet?

They don't work due to the complaexity - patches are being worked upon, though.

The Alphasim Merlin works - I've seen the very nice screenshots... :)

FSX isn't out here yet, though. So I can wait a while before upgrading the PC.

Woo!

Turned detail settings down to the mediocre suggested ones and it's now quite playable though the graphics are shocking.

The missions are absolutely fantastic.

I played the one where you have to land the cub on the bus, that's fun :)

Next I chose one where you're a chopper pilot who has to take an oil rig inspector out to a nearby rig - except that when you go to land all hell breaks loose - really exciting this one.

Finally I did a rescue mission where I had to fly around some mountains to find a downed plane, land on a very precarious flat bit of rock to rescue the pilot and then finally go back to the airbase.

The way the missions have you doing various things, suddenly pull the rug out from under you etc is really cool :)

It'll be interesting to see what missions the community come up with!

Sounds like the FSX developers have been playing San Andreas then!

Wonder if there is an equivalent mission to the one where you chase the Learjet in the Cessna then rappel, James Bond style, from one plane t'other.

Certainly sounds more entertaining than just flying around.

Don't think you can actually get out of the plane :)

Did another mission which i've not worked out how to finish yet, flying the Cessna 208 over a stretch of water your engines cut suddenly and you're coasting.

After it gets reported back to ATC that you're "going for a swim" it just goes quiet, no idea what happens next - first time around I activated auto pilot to maintain a steady slow descent, called up ATC and found my nearest airport, changed heading over to there, requested landing clearance and brought it in safe and sound - and was told mission failed. On the summary it said I failed to land on the aircraft carrier, so when I re-played the mission I just left it on a very slow descent to see if I just had to try and make it further but never did I see the carrier on the ATC or receive any further scripted radio comms.

So not sure how to finish that one at the moment.

The missions certainly add a massive challenge to the open flight environment - I just wish my machine could show it in more than "enormous pixelly block mode"!
