In FS2004, is it possible to reverse for operations such as taxiing?

If you mean pushback, then you may press Shift+P followed by either 1 or 2 to select your direction.
If you mean using reverse thrust, yes though this is not prototypical for most airliners. The DC9 does do it, however.

Apparently quite a few older types use reverse thrust to push back, although it can cause problems. Its widely reported the crash of Air Florida Flight 90 (a Boeing 737) into the Potomac River in Washington in 1982 was partly attributed to the pilot's use of reverse thrust to move off the parking stand, which blew snow and slush back onto the wing and was partly responsible for the ice accretions which led ultimately to the plane failing to gain height although the pilots lack of use of wing de-icing was the primary cause.
Interesting discussion on the types which have used reverse thrust to push back on

You can use revese thrust to push back (hold down F2) but you should really use Shift-P as in real life
