Post by wrighty »

Hi everybody, does anybody know of any decent american airports out there, that are worth getting. I just purchased UK2000's parts 1 -5 which are cracking, will pick up the other two parts soon also. but i also like flying around states also. Any suggestions anybody.

Hi Allan.

Firstly I'd recommend 'boston_logan_1.1.zip' from the AVSIM file library.

You might like to check out simflyers.net for individual airports or alternatively World Airports 2 which includes a collection of their work and is widely available. They are quite a drain on system resources though.

FlyTampa also produce some excellent sceneries.

Thats some major airports taken care of, but if you like general aviation then I can't stress how much I'm enjoying the LAGO GeoRender sceneries. They can be bought individually or they've recently released a compilation of parts 1, 2 and 3 as boxed edition which I bought at the bargain price of £14.99 (they retail individually for about £12 to £13).

Simflyers have some available too, in their World Airports 1+2 series', plus they may have some additional stand-alone airports too.

I find the smaller fields much more of an interesting challenge

I had a look at FlyTampa's site and they have some cracking re-productions. Purchased the San Fran airport. Purchasing it goes through http://www.simmarket.com and they have loads of different bits and pieces on there site. A must go to site for addon's.

Seriously though, I find the default large airports perfectly satisfactory. I don't feel the need for humungous graphic files that slow the frame rate to single figures when all I want is to enjoy a virtual flight. These add on airports look fantastic but quite frankly I don't think its worth worrying about. I did install a US terrain package though which looks pretty good.

Most of my flying is in and out of small airfields in hilly and rough terrain. Some of those are very hairy places to fly from and trees on the approach are a constant hazard. Its more scenic too, taking full advantage of the buildings/trees rendered on the fly so to speak. And you have to fly the aeroplane in too. No APP setting on your autopilot will work here. Much more fun.

Suppose it depends on ur system that u have running. With all the detailed airports i have running i don't get a problem with fps. Maybe once in a blue moon it might stick for a few seconds but otherwise no problems.

Yeah I guess so, but I wonder sometimes if people are actually doing anything interesting during their virtual flights. Apart from hectic mouse clicks taking off and landing, airliner flights from one major airport to another are completely dull (in sim land that is)

So are people simply downloading new files just to stave off boredom? Same thing happens in MSTS to some extent, or any other product with third party add ons.

But I guess its up to the individual.
