Any recommendations?

Post by Redbaron »

Hi,

This afternoon I'm going to Game to get 737-800/900 for FS2004, and I am thinking of getting another add-on while I'm there. Any recommendations? I was thinking about 747-200 RFP, although bigvern didn't seem to like it, and also A340 Pro and various scenery add-ons (VFR photographic scenery, VFR Terrain, British airports, etc.). I already have 737NG, 727 Pro, Traffic 2004 and Concorde Pro.

Unless you fly low and slow VFR flights or have one heck of a machine i wouldn't recommend the photographic scenery. Its fairly pointless above 200kts (on my system) as it struggles to keep up and the textures just blur. The areas covered are also not rendered at night and so much of the UK appears black.

I'd recommend the British Airports volumes. I don't think VFR Terrain is worth having unless you've the Visual Flight phot scenery installed.

A340 is nice but the .cfg and .air both need editing so avoid the autopilot from behaving like an air superiority fighter and nose from being pitched down during autoland.

If they've got Wilco's ERJ-145 Pilot in Command I'd recommend that. I've been doing assignments and so haven't done much with it but its had rave reviews and what I have seen of it I'm very impressed with.
Come May 16th I intend to learn this package and flying on VAT-SIM.

Thanks - I'll have a look for ERJ. British airports looks good, but I have downloaded custom scenery for most of the British airports I fly from anyway.

The ERJ is very good, I'm having fun with it!

Only problem is it hasn't yoet got many UK airport SIDs/STARs - but they have recently released an editor to correct this

Re 747-Pro, not so much a case of not recommending it but pointing out it is a very technical add on. Unless you cheat and start in a default B747 you have to do a cold and dark start every time, which several people (not just myself) have found impossible to do.

Does it not use an AIRAC cycle like those provided at navdata.at for numerous other commercial add-ons? :-?
I've just hand-flown a couple of circuits, started it up and the like and hadn't gone as far as flight planning/navigation. I presumed it might share a database with the FeelThere CRJ.

It has AIRACs, just no SID/STAR files (it has some, such as EGPH and EGPF, but no English airports - in fact it seems to lack most European airport procedures)

Oh I see. Thanks.
PMDG's NG was rather lacking in the departures and arrivals department too.

you can download SIDS/STARs for that from http://www.NavData.at. They are very good compared to the default.

Well, anyway, I got 737-800/900 and I'm very pleased with it - still find the FMC too complicated though! I need to put some time aside sometime to actually learn it in detail. I considered 747-200, but it was another £30, and so I decided I'd spend the money on flying lessons instead!
