Airbus captains have to be left-handed?

Post by 166Driver »

I can't use a joystick with the left hand, so how do they do it?

It's called type-rating :P

Seriously, they will practice in a sim until they get it, and i'm sure it's no more unnatural than driving a car on the wrong side with the gear stick on the 'wrong' side.

Or you're destined to be an FO all your career... which I could live with frankly.

I suppose its like trying to write with your left hand when you're right-handed.

Thats where I think that control columns are better.

Airbuses are designed to fly mostly on autopilot, maybe that has something to do with it?

I wonder how many seconds/minutes the average PIC spends with his hand on the sidestick on a standard 90 minute flight. :-?
Could it be as little as takeoff roll and rotation to AP engaged?

I can use either hand on the stick to fly in FS. I prefer to use my right hand, but sometimes I need to use the mouse and fly at the same time, so I just swap over.

It's not that difficult... Try it this evening.

Flying an aircraft in FS is about the one thing I can do with my left hand.
That, use a fork, bridge a cue and...

No. That's about it.

It didn't look it at first glance but the MS FF2 grip is quite comfortable in either hand.

It must be a bit difficult though, particularly for long-serving FOs who have just been promoted or what about if there are two captains and one has to sit on the right? Although I suppose it must come back fairly quickly.
