Panasonic Lumix cameras are always a fantastic choice.

Have a look at the FZ3, FZ5, FZ7 and FZ30, you Should be able to find one of those quite cheaply.
I have had the FZ3 and FZ30 in the past and have had no problems at all.
All the cameras above have 12x optical zoom, 2 stage image stabilizer (mega O.I.S) and can record video and sound.
The FZ30 has a zoom ring so the zoom can be used when recording video, all the others have a zoom slider which isn't functional when recording.

There is also an FZ50 IIRC the newest camera to the FZ range.

Yeah, I got a Panasonic Lumix TZ3, fantastic 10x Optical Zoom, with 40x Digital Zoom so go for a Panasonic, should set you back between £240-£300.

Whats your price range?

You will have to pay at least £100 for a good camera.
