To me its not as impressive as diesel clag becasue... kettles are meant to do that and thus its not very exciting to me... every kettle "clags" thus its just boring. E.g... oooo, look at the consistancy of that smoke, all black and grey, like every other kettle's smoke!! With diesels, you also don't have to wait till it's cold to get good clag.

....you want to see my Tranny Van first thing in a morning!!!!! Clags up our warehouse in no time!

But honestly, can u call steam from a steam engine clag???

Their designed to emitt steam and smoke so it cant be, and clag is only called clag when emitted from a diesel engine, or so i always thought??????

I like diesels. Even ones as clagless as 171s! Besides, you could probably drink what comes out of a kettle.

after its passed through copper and brass pipes and the odd lead joint im suprised drivers and firemen didnt die of poisoning during the heydays.

Have you seen the colour of the stuff that comes out? The liquid emissions from the SVR's Thomas looked like black tea. Or a stream in the tin-mining area of Cornwall. not drinkable at all...

A steam engine contrary to belief is not always followed round by a large cloud of black smoke, (obey the 'light grey haze')

It is down to the skill of the fireman to keep his exhaust as light coloured as possible, though for show it can be changed! Pile a load of coal down the front of the box when the driver shuts off, shut the dampers then slam the firehole door shut, and you choke out the carriages!

Impressive though black clag is, when I'm firing I avoid crating excess smoke, it dirties your loco, coaches, trackside buildings etc and does not give a good impression to general visitors. However, a certain SVR fireman who lives next to the line is never able to keep his washing clean because of the other crews!- Hint for anyone who wants some clag, hang about near sterns slack!

Steam clag is better because:
A. It smells nice.
B. It comes from good looking engines
C. Diesels only make clag from the top...so you can't get shots like this...

Steam clag is generated by coal thats absolutely rubbish, ie polish coal.

them 3 shot on the narrow are mainly showing steam. Trust me you dont want to stand around in steam clag it drys the back of your throuh and smells awful.

Any steam engine will not clag or even leave smoke trails if they are coaled with welsh brick coal.

Each to their own, but I've yet to find a nicer smell than steam clag.

Lol, what about the smell of the clag that emerges out of that stall in Kings Cross station as they bake stuff in the oven
