What a GREAT Summer!

Post by yorkie »

The last 6 weeks have been superb, I've travelled up and down the country with various people from RailUK/UKTS (I daren't try to list them all as I'd probably miss someone out!)

I'd like to thank everyone who went on the highly enjoyable trips. :D I hope, and am sure there will be many more to come. Of course, anyone is welcome to join us for these.

Here's just a few of my photos from the past 6 weeks.

The Summer Holidays got off to a great start with the amazing value (£10) Flush D'Ore SET Slam-door farewell railtour on 23 July.
Image

I finally got to North Berwick on a Class 90
Image

On 2 August we travelled up to Inverness on the GNER Highland Chieftain, seen here at Inverness alongside the Caledonian Sleeper
Image

Some of the views in the Highlands are very impressive.
Image

I took this photo at Euston after one of my arrivals on the Caledonian Sleeper.
Image

We took a few trips on the Class 90 hauled Birmingham-Manchester service.
Image

And a couple of trips on the Class 37 hauled Fort William Sleeper
Image

You can't tell by the photo but there were millions of midges flying around at Rannoch. It was difficult to get a photo that wasn't blurry. I managed to get back on the train without being bitten, amazingly! Doing heads-out along Rannoch moor behind a Class 37, seeing no sign of civilisation and the only animals you see are wild deer was an experience that just cannot be beaten IMO.
Image

And several trips on Mk1 Slam-Door EMUs in their final weeks
Image

A trip to Great Yarmouth was a bit disappointing when the Class 47 service was cancelled, but that was the only downer.
Image

Many of my trips involved late evening connections being made at Leeds...
Image

..which is a very different station at night compared to the busy day time!
Image

We travelled on the North Yorkshire Moors railway as part of an East Country Rover week.
Image

As soon as the Gerrards Cross tunnel re-opened we took a trip on Chiltern's Class 121 "bubble car"..
Image

...after a trip on a Metroplitan 1960s 'A stock'.
Image

Saturday 27 August was like going back a couple of decades, it was a great day of loco haulage from Manchester to Cardiff and of course the Rhymney services. 47847 seen here at Rhymney. I had earlier seen it depart Manchester for Cardiff.
Image

Amazingly a Class 37 operated a stopping service from Cardiff to Crewe. Some of the 'normals' joining at intermediate stations were rather surprised to say the least!
Image

One of the loco hauled specials was badly delayed into Manchester.... by a faulty Pendolino in front! (Seen here at Crewe)
Image

There were also several 'drags' on Virgin services between Nuneaton and Birmingham and, as seen here between Crewe and Liverpool, as the WCML upgrade works continue.
Image

At the end of August we took a trip on the Cambrian Coast to Porthmadog where we travelled on the Ffestiniog narrow guage railway
Image

Returning via Blenau Ffestiniog
Image

We travelled around the West Midlands (150213 is seen here at Stratford-upon-Avon)
Image

Class 350 'Desiros' are now a common sight on the WCML
Image

We saw plenty of freight, the best locations were places like Doncaster and Camden Road (below)
Image

Photography is difficult at Euston, but not impossible..
Image

The sun sets at Wakefield
Image

We managed to travel up and down the WCML on loco-hauled trains, but there's no getting away from these...
Image

...while on the ECML many of my journeys home were on these...
Image

Once again thanks for a great 6 weeks, you can see more of my photos at http://yorkie.fotopic.net/ :)

Good pics.

Compared to what I normally see on other pictures, Leeds looks eeirely quiet.

That was rather good.

I was wondering if anyone would spot that! Actually I was very lucky. Firstly I was on my way back from Hull and decided to go via Doncaster as the next train direct was a long wait. At Doncaster I discovered the ECML was closed, so I got a MML HST to Leeds (so I wasn't expecting to even be there in the first place!). As we approached Leeds we were stopped at a signal. At the same time a unit for Huddersfield was standing at a red signal (it had to wait for us as we were crossing it's path. I can't help thinking the signallers may have messed up a bit but maybe there was a good reason for that!). As we were stopped I managed to keep the camera still enough to get that photo.

I got home later than I expected that day, but it was worth it!

Actually I haven't, but maybe I should...

Actually it wasn't as expensive as you may think. :) Obviously having a YP railcard helps, but then there's rovers, and many of the trips we got things like group tickets, etc. It also helps if you know the routeing guide and know which combination of Cheap Day Returns to get, all those things help bring the price down  I'm always happy to provide ticket advice if anyone wants it.

Thank you everyone for the kind comments, and I'm glad you all enjoyed the photos. :)

Now i look at that photo again i can see the corner of your unit in the right hand side of the photo! just goes to show my theory that all the best photos are opportunistic. You may or may not have been on my photo website before, but one of my favorite photos was when i was walking along the north norfolk railway lineside and had lost track of the time and *Expletive* saw 92 squadron (spam can) in the distance so just dived into the nearest safe place and got a very nice photo! ive 'intentionally' taken photos from there since but none have been as good
