Good locations on Great Central for videography??

Are you a budding railway photographer? Want to share your work? It's like the screenshots forum, except it's meant to be shots of the real ones!

Good locations on Great Central for videography??

Post by mdanie »

I hope to visit the GCR for the first time soon. Can anyone recommend good locations for photography - especially video?

On these trips, I tend to buy a rover for the Saturday, so remain mostly in stations and on trains, then use the car/walk for access to intermediate points for passing shots on Sunday. :)

Any advice gratefully received. Cheers.

I'm hoping to make it for then - and I now have the info from the GCR website.
Quorn looks like a good starting point - and it looks as though there's a viaduct nearby that should give some panning shots. But I was interested in hearing recommendations from those who have filmed there. Are you firing that w/e?

Hi

I don't think there's a viaduct at quorn, however there are some impressive bridges at Swithland (which is a kind of viaduct, but is not very high). One of the best places is where 'Kinchley Lane' passes over the railway, looking towards Loughborough. There will probably be several photographers there, as it is a great vantage point for photos.

Thanks Chris - I'll try there. I looked at a gradient profile last night and see that trains have to climb a little out of Loughborough, so it should be a good spot to see the locos working :)

Hi

The gradients are minimal, they don't work that hard anywhere, apart from when they depart stations, or are pulling long trains.

Just a bit of feedback - an excellent Gala, so thanks to anyone involved who might read this. Drop-off freights (with different locos) especially good.

I filmed mostly at Quorn & Loughborough stations plus a little from the second bridge facing Loughborough station. Didn't make it to 'Kinchley Lane' - maybe next time :)

All day Sat plus Sun morning. The 8F was great - very natural "grimy" look :D :D especially when it was pulling freight. You probably pulled me to Leicester and back - I'll look at my video to see if I've captured footplate crew - were you firing, driving, inspecting or riding?
