That's a great site, nice photos and really interesting. "Making Tracks" may find it of use aswell...

Very interesting and informative. Why are C2C so funny about taking photos? Makes you think they have something to hide?

Thanks for the comments.
c2c said their main concern was that I might be planting a bomb. In the case of most of the towns they serve that wouldn't be a bad thing.
:P
(Don't take offence Tilburyites please !)
In that case all I needed to do was buy a ticket like any other passenger and away I go !
I had to make a few phone calls and then apply inwriting for a letter of permission to carry around with me.

GER (or what was) were very helpful, and Anglia were ok too.
I enjoyed it nonetheless, with Shenfield / Colchester being my favourite and Tollesbury Pier the worst !

Just remembered, I had to apply to the Underground for a photo permit, but that's understandable I think.

Everything needs a permit on the underground. I'm suprised you don't need a permit to buy a ticket to travel. I don't think they are too concerned about the use of flash photography in overground stations, just the ones under the city.

Would be good if someone had the time to do a site like yours for Kent and Sussex as well.

:)

A very nice site to look at. Don't forget that Hainault to Ilford via Fairlop, Barkingside and Newbury Park was a GER service in Essex so you ought to include that too, but what have they done to the loo!

Even up to Stratford was in Essex at one time.

Also the Walthamstow Central - Chingford line is well and truly Essex!

PS I used to live at Hainault, and the loos were open last time I was there!

Nice site, if a bit critical of the LTS! I don't understand the picture situation either, our bosses are a strange lot.

One day I will finish my history web-site and route (both tied together)

Excelent site.

the "Thing" you mention of is a MPV - Multi Purpose Vehicle. Used to spray water on the track to get rid of leaves, also de-icing and sandite laying.

I have a few photos of Stations in East Sussex if anyone wants to do a site?

Some wonderful pictures; as has been said, the line from Stratford was originally in Essex, and from Ilford out only became London-ised in 1965. Incidentally, when the GER proposed its new Stratford works in the late 19th Century, there was an outcry at the proposed 'despoilation of such a beautiful country district.' Nothing much has changed...

Pretty well all the London Underground Central Line through Snaresbrook to Ongar was originally GER, through a surface connection from Stratford to Leytonstone through Leyton. The present tunnel was, I believe, dug in 1949. The only 'real' Underground Stations on that line are Wanstead, Redbridge and Gants Hill, Newbury Park being the other former GER connection from Ilford towards Fairlop and the Roding Valley Branch. Even a cursory glance at the station architecture and especially the canopy valances, belies the origins of this line.
The Chingford branch has already been mentioned, but there's also the bottom end of the North Woolwich line which ran up through the Lea Valley across Clapton Marshes. Both these were originally Essex lines.

If ever you feel up to another trip, head closer to London on the fomer LTSR as well...

Despite the fact that London Transport were running tube trains round the Hainault loop from the late 1940's, steam locos were used for shunting to the coal depots right through the 1960's.
