Route discs

I'm new to U.K. outline model RR and have searched the web for information on there meaning and how to use them. Could one of you please give me a short explanaion of how they work, much thanks.
What the engines are doing:
on the line:All engines with No. 8 pulling the new express
in the shed:None

They are used on the Southern Region to explain to signalmen where a train is going and are placed on the smokebox door in certain positions, attached to the lamp irons.

Hornby still do a detail pack (Cat. No. R573) including some discs and a sheet giving some positioning details. The same pack is included with their Bulleid locos (Pacifics and Q1s)

They were also used by early diesels on the whole network instead of the lamps used on steam locos. later diesels had the 4 character head code boxes instead. Discs are used to show the type of train rather than the route.
